Role play is when you and/or your partner play the role of a fantasy character. For example, you may dress up as a sexy cop or something. Some people are excited by these things.

Sexual roleplaying is the behavior of playing some sort of character of your choice during a sexual encounter, in order to provoke a sexual fantasy in oneself and/or one's partner. This should not be confused with other types of roleplaying, such as improvisational theatre or role-playing games.
Sexual roles can be very general designations of power position, sometimes abstracted to "top" and "bottom," or very specific, detailed fantasies. The major subgroupings are described in the abbreviation "BDSM" itself: Bondage & Discipline (B&D) Domination & Submission (D&S)

Basically you assume the role of a different character for the duration of the "game". This, as pointed out below, can be sexual or non sexual. Both however have sort of the same objective in that they enable you to feel and act as though you are someone completely different. Its like a game of pretend really, just taken to a whole new level.
Sexual roleplay can be exiting since it gives you the illusion of having tried all sorts of kinky situations in a safe environment. Regular roleplay is entertaining since you get to live into a story... a little like an interactive book where you control one of the main characters.

Roleplay is like when you pretend to be someone other than who you actually are. A lot of online roleplays are out there lately. Some are for like Harry Potter and High School Musical. People just pick a character they want to be, then use a site like xanga or myspace and make a webpage pretending to be a character from something else (ex. Harry from Harry Potter, or Sharpay from HSM)

Roleplay is basically what it sounds like--you take on a role other than your real identity.
For instance, ever see those nurse costumes? Some men fantasize about being with a nurse, so their girlfriend might decide to pretend to be a nurse so their sex will be more exciting.
It's sort of like acting--a safer way to fulfill some of your fantasies.
