This makes you audience feel like you are uninterested, and in turn, they will also be uninterested.
If looking at your class bothers you, pick a spot on the wall behind them, just above their heads. Slowly, as if you were making eye contact, make figure eights with your eyes - and return to your paper if you absolutely need to.
But if you do your figure eights too fast, you'll end up looking pretty stupid, no offense.
You need to use your stage fright to your own advantage.
Think about it this way - if you're nervous, there are probably other people in your class that are nervous as well.
Besides, there's also a likely chance that half of your class won't be paying attention anyway.

krazy_lady33 answered Thursday November 16 2006, 9:34 pm: I get nervous too when i make speeches.
Obviously i guess you want a good mark otherwise you wouldnt even bother, so its gonna be over with in the end. If you do good and act like an idiot people cant say anything.
p.s. just try staring at the wall across from you and pretend youre talking to it, it should help.
karisue answered Thursday November 16 2006, 9:20 pm: my english class makes us write essays & speeches & we have to present them, and i get soo nervous.
sometimes the best thing to do, is just sorta start thinking about other things while reading your paper or making your speech.
try not to pay so much attention to the class and try your best not to worry.
im usually the only person in my class who gets up there & stutters & shakes, it's scary, and i hate it, but i guess thats about the best advice i can give you =/ [ karisue's advice column | Ask karisue A Question ]
ImFakingHotPink answered Thursday November 16 2006, 9:15 pm: I'm sure you have friends in your class so just imagine that you're talking to them. They wont make fun of you if you stumble because they probably know how hard it can be for some people. Don't figit with your hands not 'dance' around. Try and keep an eye at the back floor of the room that way it seems like you're looking at the class when you're not. [ ImFakingHotPink's advice column | Ask ImFakingHotPink A Question ]
Short_N_Punky answered Thursday November 16 2006, 8:55 pm: Ok hun im not trying to be mean to any one here but all this advice i believe doesnt work. The family thing iv done that and you still get nervous because your used to your family not to school mates school people are alot more judgemental. I am like this to but when i went into a voice class i was made to sing infront of people. We did like tests and things to raise our confidance. Anyways some good tricks are when your up there talking try to project your voice so it may sound like your not afraid but dont yell lol. Also if you have to or want to look up if you have any friends look at them and only them if you dont in that class look straight back at the wall so it makes like your looking at the crowed but your actually not find a place onm the wall and stare at it. Soon or a later you wont see anyone else in the room. Anothjer one is when you stand up there dont start right in stand for a second look at the ground or close your eyes and take three deep breaths than start your report. Dont be nervous because just remember if anyone picks on you the teacher is there to let them have it and you can laugh at them for gettign introuble. Sorry so long but i hope iv helped. Write back.
sexy_rexy answered Thursday November 16 2006, 8:33 pm: When I was younger I was exactly the same. Really nervous beforehand and my voice was very quiet when I actually gave the speech...kinda embarrassing, I know. I'd reccommend asking your mom and dad, maybe siblings too, if they'd hear you out with your speech. Read it to them a few times and after you feel comfortable then maybe ask a group of your friends if they could listen to you aswell. After that try a larger group of people that you don't know very well. It's all about feeling comfortable in different surroundings with different people. Some people find it's better to give a speech sitting down rather than standing up so you are more relaxed and it is comforting for them to have support when everyone else is staring at you. Breathe deeply before you are going to make your speech, try to calm yourself.
The most important thing to remember is that everyone else will be worried about how their speech will go aswell. They more than likely are going to be so worried about themselves that they won't even notice about you. Just like you won't be noticing them, you've been worried about yourself!
schlichtinator answered Thursday November 16 2006, 7:13 pm: Use it.
It might sound ridiculous, but use your fear as fuel. Make it drive what you're doing. I don't mean show the fear, or yield to it, but let that anxiousness turn into energy and use the energy to drive your narrative. It works. [ schlichtinator's advice column | Ask schlichtinator A Question ]
