How do you gain weight?

Question Posted Sunday October 15 2006, 11:43 pm

I'm 15, 5'1 and I weigh 85 pounds.

No, I never had an eating disorder.

I really want to gain 15 pounds.. Because I can't fit in a size 0 or 1 in jeans. I would like my hipbones not to stick out.. or my shoulder blades..

I want some fat on me. But I dont know what foods to eat. I know fatty foods, but list some meals. I'm going to do a milkshake a day. Or close to every day. (Is that healthty?)

I have a very high metabolism.. I heard, you should eat at night or before bed because you won't burn off the fat or something ?

If people think losing weight is hard.. gaining weight is even harder.

I've been struggling with it for 2 years.

Don't worry too much, you are still very young and your metabolism will slow down once you hit your twenties, as long as you are getting the nutrients you need there is nothing to worry about. Some people are just naturally slimmer.
Instead of focusing on gaining fat, as that won't make you any healthier, you need to have more protein in your diet to help build muscle. Try eggs for breakfast with wholegrain toast, and make sure there's a good amount of red meat in your diet. If you want to do the milkshake thing, try a protein shake when you get home from school.
Talk to a nutritionist if you want more advice. But don't start eating processed or sugary foods to gain weight, all they will do is make you unhealthy and tired!

Wow! That so cool. Well you could eat a bunch a fatty foods which would be fun, but the you might have mood swings, breakout, smell bad, ext. I would sugest eating lots of carbs. Breads, big bowls of pasta, bagels,...because they all expand in your stomach. Also Make sure to eat lots of whole grains, vitamins, fruits, and vegetables. Good Luck:)

See a nutritionist about this. The milkshake thing is silly. It isn't going to help you gain a single pound. Not only won't it work, eating a ton of fatty foods is very unhealthy for you. By omitting healthy foods from your diet, your body won't be getting all the nutrients it needs to funtion. You'll probably get really sick. Please don't try it. A nutritionist will be able to give you a diet that is right for your body and will help you gain and maintain weight in a healthy way. If you can't find or can't see a nutritionist, your regular doctor might be able to help you instead. Good luck :)

Lots of milkshakes, smoothies, frappacinos- it's harder for your body to digest liquid calories so that will help. I don't recommend soda because it will weaken your bones. Lots of carbs, lots of fat but make sure to eat some fruits and veggies too! Lots of red meat and nuts also. I'd recommend seeing a doctor who deals with nutrition specifically. They might even be able to prescribe something that will help.
Eating before bed will make you gain weight but it also makes it harder to sleep, so I don't recommend that.

Same boat, 5' 4" and 95 lbs. Used to be around 80 lbs, but I worked on that.

Yes, I agree - you should see a doctor but not your regular one, choose a one who deals with nutrition.

But for now, maintain your current eating/work out schedule and keep track of your calories (look at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)) and calories (look on the back of the food packaging)

Generally, people with a regular metabolism burn about 2000 calories to maintain weight. In your case, you may not be eating that much (which results in a lower weight) or burning to many calories (which case, you neet to focus on foods with a lot of carbs)

With working out, only do cardio (running, swimming etc) about twice a week - no more than 20 minutes. Again, losing calories = losing weight. Instead focus on weight training.

Do check about a nutrition doctor, they can help devise a healthy lifestyle for gaining weight.

You need to see a doctor, I think. You may not have an eating disorder, but there's something going on that ain't right. You may have a physical problem with your digestive system that's preventing you from absorbing certain nutrients, and this could lead to serious health problems - for instance, if you aren't absorbing sufficient calcium, you could end up with early-onset osteoperosis. My wife has that (she's 33) and it ain't a good thing.

Oh, and there's probably nothing wrong with a milkshake every day, as long as you brush your teeth.
