Question Posted Sunday August 20 2006, 4:13 pm

hi. I am a 13/f and i started my period about 6 months ago. I play soccer alot and do track in school. I have never used a tampon, only pads. My mom wont bring the subject up and i'm too nervous to ask her how to use it or if I can use them. PLEASE HELP!!!! my soccer tournament is in a few weeks and thats when my next period is supposed to come! any advice on how my mom can bring up the subject? or how i can get the nerve to talk to her about this?? should i just not tell her and just use one?? but i've never used one before and i'm nervous and dont know how to use one. ok its just a tampon. so i dont see why your mom would care but i dont know your mom. so if theres something about your mom that your leaving out (is she strict real uptight upset easily)) that makes you extremely uncomfortable about bringing it up then just take it apon your self to get some tampax is a good brand and tampons come with instructions and if your mom finds out its not like you stole booze or started smoking there just tampons and im sure shell get over it and forgive you id hope so and if you have any more problems or questions just ask.

A tampon is a serious thing to use. if it isnt used properly it could cause something (sorry i dont remember what its been a while since those sex videos in health class. But i do know something happens when it isnt used right) She isnt going to bring it up unless you start hinting. When your in the grocery store say "oh wow look at that tampon" or something. Otherwise just go up to her when your alone with her and ask her about it. Thats what moms are for. I know its hard to talk to parents about stuff like that but she wants to help you.

If you still dont feel right asking your mom, then you can ask to see your doctor and they`ll tell you everything you need to know. Tell your mom you need a physical before the soccer competitions. Its completely free anyway. Or you can just call your doctor and ask.

Hope I helped.

darling, it's your mom. you shouldn't feel uncomfortable asking her about tampons.. i'm sure she was the same way when she was growing up. don't be nervous, just one day when you guys are alone just tell her you want to start using tampons. [it's not that big of a deal. you are just stressing yourself out].. sure, you don't know how to use them. but it's not as hard as you think. i'm sure she won't care to tell you.

just talk to your mom, and tell her tht it would help a lot to wear tampons instead of pads. if she gets a lil uncomfortable about the conversation, talk to her about having an open relatioship about this girl stuff. or, when you guys are shopping one day, casually drop a box of tampons in the cart. then she'll definatly get the picture, haha.

hope i helped!

i don't agree with twistedteen... your mom can't tell you when you are ready for that. it's not ahuge decision. if anything, it's a personal choice. i took a couple from my mom and used them the first time. take the intrustions, read them before and when you are putting it in and you should be fine. later you can ask her to buy you some.. i doubt she'll say no, especially being really athletic. <3

Excuse me, but what's wrong with pads. If your on the swimming team than that's a different story. But if your mom's not bringing up the subject, maybe she doesn't think your ready. But I could be wrong. Ask her, if she thinks you desperately need it than why not.

hey maybe your mom thinks you are fine with using pads? people aren't mind readers although some of the time we wish they were to save us from embarassment. You can suggest to your mom that you would feel more comfortable with a tampon i wouldn't use one during the tournament because it takes a little getting used to. it doesnt hurt but it feels strange and makes you feel like if you move then it might fall out but it wont

Don't listen to xoIDOLox, she's wrong about them hurting, they totally don't. You don't feel them at all when you use them. Ask your mom to buy you tampons and if she won't then buy them yourself. If you buy Tampax Pearl, they come with instructions for first-timers. And like I said, if you do it right, they don't hurt at all. The only way they could possibly cause you harm is if you were to get TSS, which would only happen if you didn't change it ever 4-8 hours, which is easy to remember to do anyway. So just change it regularly and you'll be fine.

xoIDOLox answered Sunday August 20 2006, 6:37 pm:
Tampons are very uncomfortable when you first put them in, and I would not recommend them unless you've had your period for at least 5 years or are an adult. Also, you could get TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). They are very hard to put in, and it might take a while to do on your first time.

If I haven't dissuaded you already... if you REALLY want to use a tampon, just bring it up with your mom, its no big deal. Its not like she hasn't been through what you're going through right now. When you're alone, in the car or whatever, just say something like, "Hey, Mom, could you pick up a pack of tampons for me next time you go to the store?" I think she'll take the hint. Although if she says the same thing I did, don't try to go out and buy apack on your own. She knows best.

And just so you know... you can do sports with a pad. Just change it before your game starts.
