is it my period?

Question Posted Thursday July 27 2006, 4:39 pm

I'm 13 and obviously female and this afternoon I started getting cramps. At first I thought it was just a stomach ache and maybe I ate too much, but it felt kind of different. My mom suggested that I was going to get my period soon, and I already had boobs, hair on my body, and discharge. 3 hours later, when I went to the bathroom I noticed a big dried up brownish spot on my underwear. There wasn't alot of it but it wasn't liquid. Could this be my period? I don't know because people tell me the very first time you get your period you dont have cramps and you don't get cramps until like the 2nd or 3rd time. I didn't feel any blood coming out either. Not to gross you out, but in a way it looks like dried up poop but in a really light brown color.

You can get cramps at any time. I was exactly the same - I only started my period in March, and I'm 15. If you've had discharge for a while, like I did, it's almost impossible to feel your period coming out. (gross, I know, but bear with me.) When I started my period, I was in school, and I had to get a towel from the school toilets. After a few minutes, I went back to the toilets, and the deposit on the towel was clearly blood.

i had bad cramps before I got my period.
But yeah, that sounds like dried up blood, so you might be starting, soon.
it's very irregular for well, the first couple years.

Hmm. It really sounds like it is your period. I was 13 too.. and I had the sameeee exact thing. It was brownish red and just a dot about the size of 2 quarters. It was like that for about 2 or 3 days then I started gushing blood like normal. (Not really gushing, you know what I mean.)

Definetly sounds like your period. Ummm i have some tips for cramps because i got mine over 2 years ago and im 13 now so i guess im lucky (not haha). Anyways, you should use a heating pad. This kind of makes it better but to some people it doesnt seem to work. Also, try not to take hot showers. And get midol or just take tylenol for cramps. And if its hurting really bad you should get exercise...try doing some pilates (i know that sounds really horrible but it really helps). It stretches your body. Kay hope i helped.

For me cramps always feel like my ovaries are filled with liquid like I really have to pee... The brown spot in your underwear could deffinatly be your period... it also might be a part of Pre-menstural-system (PMS) called spotting... to be on the safe side of leaks I would wear a pad or panty liner... you can deffinatly get cramps the first time I know I did! I've never felt blood coming out most people dont... don't be scared if you see something that looks like skin because it is normal it is just the lining of your uterus.

FrEe2bMe answered Thursday July 27 2006, 4:46 pm:
Put simply; it's your period. For the first couple of years of having a period your cycle and flow are going to be irregular. Brown spotting can be a period. That doesn't mean that this period is over, so to be on the safe side you should probably wear a thin pad or at least a pantiliner for protection. It could come more heavily in the days to follow--or maybe not at all. You just have to kind of wait around and see. Also, it is possible to have cramps your first time. So welcome to the world of womanhood. Try not to use a tampon the first period or two until you see what your flow is really like. :)
