I'm not trying to offend anyone,
there are a lot of stories about fairies, and there are a lot of stories about God.
We don't have proof that fairies or God exists...yet so many people are convinced God does, while fairies or something of the sort are classified as just things in story books.
I'm not trying to get attention or anything, but I kind of don't get it.
So, just wondering...do you have an answer?
Additional info, added Wednesday July 19 2006, 6:57 pm: I'm not trying to compare God to fairies, I just picked that randomly. My question is more like: Why are people so sure God exists?. WhiteIce1521 answered Saturday September 2 2006, 7:36 pm: everyone has their own idea about whether God is real or not... and the reason there seems to be more people that believe in God than fairies and other mythical things is that most people that believe in all the myths of creatures like fairies, dwarfs, dragons, werewolves, vampires, and the list goes on, are to afraid of being ridiculed and made fun of b/c no one sees them as having any meaning to humans. And most people see God as meaning to them... something they can relate to, the person they believe created them... and all those creatures, they just don't understand... so really it's all about opinions... you know what's funny, that people argue about things like that... when no one has proof...and when i see people arguing about different religions, and ones real and the other's not… blah blah blah... i just laugh and say… why does it even matter? when all that matters is ones own pinion 2 themselves... for if you truly believe in what you believe... it should b enough and you shouldn't feel the need to prove it, unless you doubt the very thing you believe... but once again... this is only my opinion... i'm not sure if any of that helped... but i hope it did [ WhiteIce1521's advice column | Ask WhiteIce1521 A Question ]

Igotamonopoly answered Thursday July 20 2006, 6:51 am: I'm Jewish, so this might be a different perspective from other answers-
I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason. I mean, yes, this could all be coincidental, but I believe that there is something, or someone, responsible for all of the things that go on.
I think that I also believe it because I went to temple as a little girl and learned all about Torah, I recently had my Bat-Mitzvah. All of the biblical stories aren't special to me becuase "God" created them, tey just hold certain morals that I would agree with anyway.
I think that I just classify my general beliefs as believing in God, and I think that "God" means something else to everyone on the planet.
viviena answered Wednesday July 19 2006, 11:16 pm: Are you one of those types of people who can't be content without a definitive answer? Because you probably won't get one, at least not to your satisfaction.
First off, faith in a supreme being, sole creator of the universe, etc., is a somewhat Abrahamic point of view -- there's nothing wrong in that, except there's more than one way of thinking about god(s) out there. A satisfactory answer might lie in the dozens of conceptions out there, some of which suppose the universe IS god (pantheism), the universe is a PART of god (panendeism), or that god(s) made the universe but then left it to its own devices (classical deism). Try researching other viewpoints or religions. Even Christianity, though it would seem like there's only Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodoxy, has had hundreds of schools of thought in its long history, all with different ideas of God, Jesus, and the universe.
As for proof of God, Christians can tout their Bibles all they like, Muslims their Koran, Jews their Torahs, even Hindus their Bhagavad Gita -- they might state that proof of god(s) lies in their respective scriptures. However, when it comes down to it, it's all a matter of faith. A person can trust in an existance of a certain god, no matter what reason and rationality might say. Relative truths, sure, but if you're looking for the ultimate truth, you probably won't get it.
Faith isn't a bad thing though, neither are you free from faith as you might think -- for example, love for your siblings is often a matter of faith, in that you trust them, but not always because they've shown any decency, altruism, or superiority in behaviour, which would be very rational of you, but simply because you would care and love them, for they are kin to you, and it would be hard to do otherwise.*
* (Of course, there may be exceptions. ;-))
So, no, I don't have an answer, not a satisfactory one for you anyway (I'm Buddhist and deist, so am happy to keep on learning). Others have their answers, but it's up to you whether they're satisfactory or not. Just keep in mind there's so much more viewpoints and conceptions of god and the universe than what you've been brought up with or exposed to. [ viviena's advice column | Ask viviena A Question ]
sassysara answered Wednesday July 19 2006, 11:14 pm: Ok, so only you can decide whether God exists or not. Also there are many different versions of God depending on what religion you chose to follow. What I would suggest you do is maybe visit different types of churches and religous sanctuaries to see what is right for you, if there is a belief that you want to follow.
One of my favorite quotes is: "Religion is for those who are afraid to go to hell, Spirituality is for those who have been there". In other words Religion is the stuff created by man, Spirituality is a pure belief a relationship between you and your higher power or God.
Your Question is one that people have fought wars over (take the middle east for example) it is a very valid question but only you can decide on whether God is real. Millions of people do not believe in God, Millions of people do there is no right or wrong answer it is simply a matter of faith.
Hope this helped, let me know if you have any other questions I can help you with.
P.S.
I lived in Ireland for a few years and I have visited where it is believed that the fairies live, it is an awe inspiring experience. I wouldn't be so sure that they don't exist! Ask an Irishman!! :) [ sassysara's advice column | Ask sassysara A Question ]

ANadoptedMelody answered Wednesday July 19 2006, 7:35 pm: i agree with eternitysofbliss.. and i would like to add that when you have faith in God and follow his will, and become a christian.. you can feel his pressence sometimes.. like when you pray..its a great feeling of happiness.. also when you believe in God..he protects you and you stop having night mares and stuff.. you can read the bible if you want to know more about God.....
faires are one of those magical mythicals, thereas; god is not magical.. he does do miracles and all ..but its diffeent from magic.. magic is bad and its witch craft according to the bible...
if you want to believe in God and devote your life to him(take this seriously if you really want it to happen, here's how you do it(the christian way):
1) believe that Jesus, God's son died up on the cross.
2)ask forgiveness of your sins
3) confess your faith in him as your savior, and believe when you die you'll have eternal life with him...amen!!
once your ask christian, you have to try your best to follows his ways and follow ten commandments.. you don't have to be perfect...well if you decide to become a christian.. it might help you answer this..i don't know if that's what you want??
read the bible.. love Melody ;) [ ANadoptedMelody's advice column | Ask ANadoptedMelody A Question ]

My dad says 6trace it back and everything in the bible can be historically proven. I choose to belive him. You can look into it if you want but in the end it's really your chioce. Does God exist to you? If yes, you can take that in and rest easy knowing where you go when you die. If no, well, then what's your reward when life is through? everlastingdreamer answered Wednesday July 19 2006, 7:30 pm: 1) there is proof that God did exist. In the bible, relics things that different people recored.
2) People belieev in God easier because they have reson to
3) those who believe in God should belieev in faires because when St. Micheal was Fighting the Devil the Angels taht stood by and watched were condemed to earth until they are forgiven and are what many people believe are faires
4)Not an encredibule amount of people have seen faeieres opossed to the apperations of God Saints The blessed Virgin etc... and most sighting of Faeires turn out to be of drunk people or people who may have reason to wwwant to make people believe that they were taken by faeries, although there are incounters that are extremly beliveable...
eternitysofbliss answered Wednesday July 19 2006, 6:51 pm: Umm well you should search for the question your trying to ask, cause i cant find it ;). But on assumption, my best guess would be:
A) God is thought of as an almighty being, a state of existance if you will; while, fairies are defined as mythical creatures.
B) God is "felt" by those that believe(or so its claimed) while fairies wouldnt be felt.
C) God is seen by inexplained miracles; I cannot see anyway one could percive a fairy.
D) Some believe that their is proof that there is god while others believe that science just hasnt revieled means for which to solve these mysteries. Fairies on the otherhand are widely accepted to be fictional: made up for children's stories.
**notice nowhere is my beliefs of god presented. My response is purely of what may explain why fairies and god are percieved and accepted differently.**
**edit** well, thank you for clarifying your question. In short, they are not sure god exists, but they hold faith that he does. The principal of god is solely based on faith. They believe that god exists sort of how we either believe democracy is good or communism is good. They believe in god because thats how they percieve things. It would be similar to the way good and bad is percieved. Some people claim that they can feel god, or have a connection to god, but truth be, its more of a hope. They hope god truely exists, that there is a higher being, and that morality is defined. [ eternitysofbliss's advice column | Ask eternitysofbliss A Question ]
kevin1986 answered Wednesday July 19 2006, 6:46 pm: I can't give a definite answer as to why I believe in God, except to say that you have to have faith. If you pray, you hope someone is listening to your prayers and I believe they are. You just don't always get the answer you want and this leads some to believe that God hates them or isn't there. Again, I don't know if there is a God or a devil or anything like that, and I can't prove anything. But I have faith that there is one and I'd rather live a life like there was one and be wrong, then live a life like there wasn't and be wrong.
