I'm going to try to become a vegatarian. I just want to try it out and see if I can live without meat. I heard it helps lose weight. I AM NOT GOING TO BE ANOREXIC! I'm just not going to eat meats. I know meat has a lot of protein, so besides meat what are some healthy foods that have protein?
Alli answered Tuesday July 11 2006, 7:43 pm: Well I think if becoming a vegetarian is something you want to do then you should. As far as other foods that have protein some foods are:eggs, fish, dairy products, beans, veges. To name a few. If you want to find out some more I suggest that you go on a website like google and look up some foods that have protein in them.

MikeCFT answered Tuesday July 11 2006, 2:56 pm: Proteins are funny because unless they're a complete protein with all essential amino acids, they're really useless. For natural food, there is no better protein source than eggs- they contain all of the essential amino acids needed to form complete peptide bonds and insure muscle tissue growth and repair. Vegetarians have it tough because they need to learn how to combine protein sources to make what is called a Complete Protein. Some ideas are-
-Rice & Beans
-Spaghetti & Cheese
-Cottage cheese & Fruit
-Fruit & Yogurt
-Eggs with any other good protein source
There is one thing on a vegetarian's side unless they are Lacto-ovo-vegetarians and that is their option to eat fish. Other than eggs, fish contains the best protein for a natural food source. Tuna, salmon, lobster, clams- they're all good and contain good Omega 3 and 6 fats that we all need. Vegetarian or not, you need to supplement with a protein source that comes from animals such as Milk. Now would be a good time to also invest in a good multi vitamin and a protein powder for further supplementation of protein and nutrients. Can't live without protein and you might as well take advantage of modern advances in nutritional supplementation. [ MikeCFT's advice column | Ask MikeCFT A Question ]
mrbrodie answered Tuesday July 11 2006, 9:02 am: Quorn is a meat substitute, it's probably the biggest meat substitute brand (and contains lots of protein). If you're looking away from like meat products then you should eat lots of nuts and pulses, these are high in protein :) [ mrbrodie's advice column | Ask mrbrodie A Question ]

Moop answered Monday July 10 2006, 10:58 pm: I'm a vegetarian/transitioning vegan. I have a lot of recipes and that sort of thing for future reference.
now. fake meats are often made to have the nutritional content of real meats. a lot of them contain more balanced amounts of protein than real meat. they're also low-fat alternatives. get to know them. a lot of them taste exactly like meat. my favorites are boca burgers (having never liked real burgers), smartdogs, and practically everything made by veggie patch. I've heard a lot of negative reviews of tofurkey products, but I have one friend who swears by them.
rice, beans, and spinach all contain partial proteins. you need combination foods to gain the same type of protein as from real meat. rice and beans together is a good choice. get to know beans. they're really really good and can be prepared in thousands of ways and very few people really know them as well as they should. I have a lot of really great bean soup recipes I can give you if you're interested. spinach replaces the iron content you'll be lacking and it's not as bad as most people think. My favorite spinach products are veggie patch spinach nuggets and Amy's frozen spinach pizza. I could live off of spinach and beans. seriously.
finally, being a vegetarian does not help people lose weight unless they stick to strict food allotments and exercise. as a vegetarian I've lost six pounds (in 4 months). my mom, who is also dieting and casaually eating meat, has lost about that much every month. my dad has actually gained weight. I cook for the family and I don't use meat (so around here we don't buy meat anymore). consider low-meat dieting and exercise if you're more serious about losing weight. and remember to take several months to transition into vegetarianism. your body needs time to learn to cope with massive amounts of beans (that you'll be eating if you're like me) where it once got easy-to-digest fats in meat. that's why I'm transitioning into total veganism. I need to have time to get used to soy milk and soy cheese. I need time to eliminate eggs in my diet. my transitioning plan included a few days every week where I could eat meat and a few days where I would eat only vegetarian-safe foods. I set myself a date (april 1st, 2006) where I would completely stop eating meat and other smaller dates where I would quit eating beef or chicken or fish. the key to doing it safely is taking a lot of time to change.
edit in response to MikeCFT: Lacto-ovo vegetarians DO NOT eat fish. pescotarians are vegetarians that allow themselves to eat fish. pellotarians refrain from red meat only. [ Moop's advice column | Ask Moop A Question ]
