Tomorrow I have to get my first cavity done.. ever! I'm so scared because I know they have to numb your mouth with novocaine by putting a needle through your gum! I have such a fear of needles or anythign sharp but I still have to get this done. Does the shot really hurt that much? What can I compare the pain too! Thank you
samthebear answered Sunday July 9 2006, 11:09 pm: um... it usually doesn't hurt at all but if the dentist has to use novocaine then i believe that the cavity is really bad.. i've had my cavities filled since i was a kid and trust me the needle is just a pin prick compared to the pain you'd feel if the dentist didn't use novocaine. if you've ever accidently poked yourself with a pin thats how it feels like but you won't feel the pain pretty quickly because it's an anesatic. i've never had to use (or rather my dentist never used anesatics before) any anesatic but if the cavity is really deep it'll hurt like hell if your dentist doen't use novocaine. just relax and it'll be over before you even know it. hope that helped =] [ samthebear's advice column | Ask samthebear A Question ]
JackiexMarie answered Sunday July 9 2006, 10:24 pm: Since I was like, 8 I have been getting fillings for cavaties. EVERYTIME I went to do one i would always cry and make my mom hold my hand during the needle and it would take me 20 minutes to finally let the dentist give me the novacaine. But when it actually went it, i was like "Thats what I was crying about" You hardly feel anything! [ JackiexMarie's advice column | Ask JackiexMarie A Question ]
Moop answered Sunday July 9 2006, 10:11 pm: if you're afraid of needles you can probably request laughing gas instead. the actual process doesn't hurt at all. they drill down your tooth around the cavity then fill it with a sealant. it's not a big deal. take a CD player. uisforukelele answered Sunday July 9 2006, 9:45 pm: no, it really doesn't hurt that much... if at all! i barely even notice when they do it. most of the time they'll let you listen to music (at least, at my dentist) or you can probably bring a portable cd player or mp3 player to take your mind off of it. you won't be in much pain at all. they might even give you a little cup of numbing stuff to drink like 30 minutes before you even sit down in the dentist chair! so with that and the fact that it's just a tiny little bit of pressure you feel on your gums, you're not going to be in much pain at all. and if they give you laughing gas, you're going to be too goofy to notice much of anything! it'll go by really fast and soon enough it'll all be done with. Shortie8959 answered Sunday July 9 2006, 9:07 pm: I just had a cavity not too long ago and the actual process doesn't hurt at all because your mouth is numb. The needle thing though, doesn't really hurt, but it might make you wince and your eyes might water. That's what happened to me, it could be different for you though. But it doesn't hurt that bad, and it only lasts no more than 5 seconds. I don't mind needles, but I'm terrified of what they use at the dentist on your mouth, so I know how you feel. And also, in case you wondered, the numbness should go away in about 4 hours after it's done. Ok I hope I helped answer your question and good luck! And don't worry, it will all be over sooner than you think. :)

Exquisitechick answered Sunday July 9 2006, 8:55 pm: Since you are scared of needles, it will probably hurt for you. But, right after it happens you dont feel it anymore, your mouth goes numb. So, you will only be in pain for like 5 seconds
Alli answered Sunday July 9 2006, 8:55 pm: Dear Cavity Ahh,
I don't thyink you hould be worried about it because when they numb your mouth it doesn't hurt that is why they numb it so you woin't feel a thing. So there is nothing to worry about just close our eyes and you won't feel a thing. You will be surprised that you are actually done when you are. Good Luck!
