MRI scan + belly button piercing

Question Posted Saturday July 8 2006, 4:00 pm

I am getting an MRI scan soon for my head (jaw). Would I have to take out a belly button barbel? It's some type of surgical metal I don't quite remember what type. Is there anyway I can keep it in? I have had the piercing for a couple of months but I still have a month to go before I can take it out or change it and I really don't want to mess with it.

Thanks!!

Im not quite sure if it will be nessesary to take it out but I work as an assistant to my father in the local hospital. Since the MRI is a large and powerful magnet, metal can sometimes ruin the picture scan that comes out. All you have to do is ask the docter before you go in. Hope your MRI goes successfully. o0o0o and i little tip- its real loud, so bring ear-plugs and ask to put on ear mufflers when you get they(they have them there) Hope my advice was helpful to you!

"Certain metallic devices can cause interference with the scan, and their presence during the study may cause injury to you if the force of the magnet pulls the metal object. It is particularly important for us to know if you have a pacemaker, a defibrillator, a muscle stimulator or other implanted electrical device, a history of heart or brain surgery, brain aneurysm clips, shrapnel, or a history of getting metal fragments in your eyes. When you have the scan, even though we are focusing on one specific area, your whole body does go into the scanner. In fact, just walking into the scanning room puts you within the magnetic field since the magnet is never turned "off." That is why we have to know about metal anywhere in/on your body. You will be asked on numerous occasions about any metal implants. Please try to be as thorough as possible when answering as this is for your safety."

Put a retainer (plastic) one in there! It would save the worry ;]

If the scan is for your jaw then I don't think your piercing would harm the scan or yourself at all. So don't worry about it. Makesure you consult your doctor about it though or any specialist before u take the scan.

I'm not a doctor or anything but i've had alot of catscans which are similar and you'll most likely have to remove it. I'm sure if you've had it down for a few months and then only take it out for an hour or so it won't hurt anything. But definately let your doctor know that you have it in there before you get it done.

well if they do the mri for only your head, then no, but you should ask the person, because i had my knee mried, and only my knee was scanned, and any other part of my body could move. so you should ask your scanner

You probably aren't gonna have to take it out, if you do try to see if you can get a spacer put in it... either that or have an alternate scan.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to take it out. RI scans use really powerful magnets. It shouldnt matter though if its only for a really short time. Good luck :)
