Okay, well, this July, I'm babysitting a 10-11 year old girl named Maggie. She's a cute kid, but there is one problem. She's completely hyper all the time. She gets nervous alot and really easily.
I just wanted to know if ya'll had any ideas for fun, quiet, easy-clean up games that will keep her situated for a while.
This is a FULL day job, twice a week, $50 a day. I know that seems a lot, but trust me, she's worth it.
ANYTHING that would help me with this will help me because I really need the money.

jumadel answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 12:46 am: Hi, there are heaps of games you can play. For example:
1. Snakes and Ladders
2. Hide and seek
3. Draughts
4. Chess (if you can both play?)
5. Tag (can tire her out)
6. Dominoes
7. Guess who
8. Playstation or computer games
9. Ludo
10. Card games
Do anything it takes, but try and keep her busy. Physical stuff like kicking a ball around is good. It can tire the girl out. The secret is to keep her busy, or she might get bored and take control. Hyperactive kids usually like to do things that involve running or jumping, anything that keeps them on their toes. If they don't get that opportunity then they can start controlling you if you let them. Hope Ive helped. Daniel. [ jumadel's advice column | Ask jumadel A Question ]
x0brittany0x answered Sunday June 11 2006, 8:48 am: I suggest playing hide-and-goseek but other options include;
-taking her to the playground/park
-play tag (it will release her energy)
-swimming (maybe if you have a pool around)
-drawing ; coloring ; sidewalk chalk
-the quiet game. lol.
-go to the libraury and get her books.
-talk to her.
i'm pretty sure i could think of more stuff; however it is pretty early in the morning. [ x0brittany0x's advice column | Ask x0brittany0x A Question ]
xxsima answered Friday June 9 2006, 2:30 pm: I love doing a scavenger hunt type of thing with the kids that I babysit. You can hide objects around the house and give out clues, and if she finds all, or most of the objects, you can give her a little prize. The kids that I do that with really enjoy it and it'll keep her guessing! [ xxsima's advice column | Ask xxsima A Question ]
FEF1992 answered Friday June 9 2006, 11:43 am: Try playing outdoor sports with her that takes up a lot of energy. Also try purchasing a mini trampolene bouncing is a good way to let off extra energy. DO NOT give her caffine. Try coloring (no paint) or video games. Make her one of her favorite foods to eat she might feel secure around you. and take her for walks around the neighborhood.

Advicelady6798 answered Friday June 9 2006, 11:42 am: A game that works alot is hide and go seek. When you hide you have to be very quiet so you dont get discovered. Playing ball with her outside will kepp her occupied she has to keep her eye on the ball so she cant really run anywhere. And try not to give her caffeine or chocolate b/c that makes hyperness go higher. I work in a preschool and making like spagetti O's or ravoli's or something that is good for her and tastes good has an effect on lowering her hyperness. Maybe making coolaide doesnt have much caffeine in it so you could give her that.If you do give her pop then try and make it so its one can a day. Some things that calm children down are tv shows like the disney channel, this channel helps children learn in a good way. If you keep her hyperness at normal then she will take naps that are longer so you cna rest. Board games always work because they have to stay still in order to win. S_C answered Friday June 9 2006, 8:52 am: Are there any parks or pools nearby that you could take her to? Or any basketball courts or baseball fields. On the baseball fields you could play just about any game, kickball, baseball, spud, and more. Most of these things would be a lot more fun with more kids which is why I asked if there are any kids around her age nearby. Start off the day doing the outside activities so you can tire her out, then you can go inside and play some board games or watch a movie or tv. When I babysit my mothers best friend's kids, she has two out of control boys, they listen to me. What they like to do with me is cook. It's really weird but they promise me they will behave if I let them help me cook something crazy. Of course I am the only one allowed to use the oven, but they like to help me mix stuff and, of course, be the taste testers. Or you can do arts and crafts, outside if you're afraid it will be messy.
If she has chalk then you can play hopscotch or snail. Or you could just draw. IF she has clay or play dough then you can play with that. Those are some fun, simple things.
I hope this helps some. If you want any more babysitting ideas I could probably think up some stuff that I do when I babysit. I've been doing it for years, so it must work somehow. [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
Tulipg17 answered Friday June 9 2006, 7:44 am: It might be best to engage her in high energy activities earlier in the day (playground, pool, sport-type games) to burn off some of that energy and wear her out for some quiet time later. Otherwise you have a situation where she is "ready to go" and wants to jump around and play actively but you are trying to get her to be quiet. For activities to do after the energey time is over; try bored games, movies, books, and such. Who knows? She might be ready for a nap by then! [ Tulipg17's advice column | Ask Tulipg17 A Question ]
