I need help, really fast.

Question Posted Sunday June 4 2006, 3:02 pm

Okay, this is kind of gross, but I mean, I really need help, and fast. You see, we've had a long history of breast cancer in my family, and my aunt died of it 2 years ago.

Well, I was taking a shower today, and I got out to dry myself off. I noticed that my chest hurt really bad, and I looked down, and saw this huge lump on the side of my nipple. I felt it and it felt like this huge ball underneath my skin. It hurts realy, really bad. I know that your breasts already hurt if you touch 'em, but this was just like excrusiating pain.

So I have a few questions.
1. Can you get breast cancer at 14 years old? (I just turned 14 on may 30th.)
2. Does anyone else have this?
3. If not, should I get it checked out?
4. If I do need to get it checked out, how should I tell my Mom?

I'm like, really scared. I hope its nothing, but I don't know who to ask. My Mom's not here, and when she does get here, she'll have 3 friends with her. Please help me ASAP!

1. I'm 13 and have had breast cancer for a year, so yes, it is possible.

2. Me, and thousands of other people. But I'm also diagnosed with cancer. So..yeah

3.

4. Just tell her, "Mom, my breast hurts really, really bad."

Since your mom will have friends wih her, you probably shouldn't tell her then. Wait until you are alone, like in the car, or shopping. Just tell her what you told us. Its not that hard once you start talking.

If you need somebody to talk to, I'm here, and can answer most of your questions. My email is mother_trucker_8592@yahoo.com I also have AIM, my screen name is Ashleigh Br00ke (those are zeros by the way)

I hope nothing is wronge. God Bless. <3

1) Yes you can get it at any age.
2)Not really but I am a small person. I had a lump on my breast and I went to get it checked oout and they said I could feel that cause I am so small.
3)Yes better be safe than sorry.
4)Just be straight up tell her how you feel and show her the lump. Its your mother you should be able to tell her anything this is very important.

Good luck to you and sorry about your history of the family we have it to but lung cancer.

although it is possible i was told not to worry about it.. we had a lady come in from a preg. resource/cancer center for health one day and she said not even think about checking yourself because lumps are common while you are developing.

you can get it check out if you want but if i were you i would wait a month or soo to see if anything happens to you. if your close to your period it could just be that because your breasts get tender when you have your period

You can get cancer at any age, especially if you have a family history of it. You should definately get it checked out. It might be nothing at all. Just a cyst or other lump, but if it is cancer then catching it early could be the difference between life and death. I don't want to scare you and the chance of a 14 year old having breast cancer is very low, but like everyone said, better safe than sorry. When you mom gets home ask to talk with her alone for a moment and then tell her what you found. If her friends are only going to be there for a little while then you can wait until they leave. You should see a doctor as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope I helped.

Love, Rainbow

Good News!OK, i have had one of my mom's friends have this EXACT same thing! and it was because she drank TOO MUCH CAFFEINE! she had a "ball" under her chest skin, and she had to totally quit drinking coffee, red bulls, sodas, etc. If I were you, i would be on the SAFE side by drinking NON-CAFFEINE sodas, ok? But i dont know for sure, but i would rather you be safe, than sorry.

isis answered Sunday June 4 2006, 5:51 pm:
You can get cancer at any age, even men can get breast cancer, about 1% of them. However, it is rare in someone of your age.
The main areas to develop cancer in the breast are the milk ducts and the milk producing tissue which are still growing at your age, and those areas can be sore at this time anyway.
Get it checked out as soon as possible, some breast cancers do cause pain but so do some benign breast lumps such as cysts.
You need to tell your mom as soon as possible. When she gets home, tell her you need to show her something in your room urgently or just make an excuse to get her alone. Then tell her what has happened and how worried you are. She is going to take you seriously due to the family history. Then get to a doctor.
The chances are that it is a benign lump which is not dangerous, just painful and very scary, but they do usually go away. However, please don't wait to see if this happens, for your own peace of mind and wellbeing, see a doctor.
The very best of luck to you.

lucretia answered Sunday June 4 2006, 4:43 pm:
Yes, it is a sad fact that a fourteen year old girl can get breast cancer. Having said that, it is extremely rare at that young age, but it does occur. I understand that you must be feeling extremely scared, and as if doom is hanging over you. It isn't, but the only way to dispell your fear is to GET IT CHECKED OUT. Now, before you get in a worse panic(or of course-in the extremely unlikely case that you DO have cancer-, it worsens).
As for telling your mother, you just need to get ahead and do it. Tell her how scared you are, and get her to take you to the doctor. I'm sorry to sound blunt here- I really hope I'm not being harsh, and I do undertand how bad you must be feeling, but there is no running away from that kind of fear, it must just be faced. If it's any consolation, I had the same symptom as you, when I was about your age, or a couple of years older. It turned out to be a rash...........A false alarm, as these things are in most cases.

Take care, good luck, and GO TO THE DOCTOR. Also, please to message my inbox to tell me how it went. If you want to IM me, my address is lucrece_13@hotmail.com. Stay well,

Lucretia xx.

Nallie answered Sunday June 4 2006, 4:35 pm:
First of all, I want to tell you it's good that you are aware of the potential for breast cancer. But secondly, I want to tell you not to worry.

Most cancerous breast lumps are not painful initially, and it would be extremely rare for a 14 year old to have breast cancer. This may only be a result of hormonal changes, or could be another benign type of cyst. Now with the best case scenerio in mind, think positive and see your Dr anyway. If it's nothing.. the Dr's visit will relieve some of your fear, and if it needs treatment you will get that too.

Take your Mom aside and tell her you have some sort of "cyst" on your breast, and would like to see a Dr. Don't be embarassed..because you really have no choice at this point, it's just something you have to tell her. In addition, the Dr will not make you feel bad for going, so try to relax and it will be okay.

Let us know how you are doing.

1. you can get any kind of cancer at any age.
2. i dont know for sure ifanyone else has it- but i know for a fact that its not normal, if thats what you mean.
3. you should DEFINETELY- no questions asked- get it checked out.
4. tell her like it is- you cant hide it- its not somethnig you can prevent. she will definetely understand. its along the lines of when you got your first period- its not your fault that it happened!- but you had to tell her, right!
hope i helped, good luck hon.

sbloemeke answered Sunday June 4 2006, 4:09 pm:
First, you can get it at 14. You can get any form of cancer at any age. The only thing that you cannot get is a gender specific type of cancer if you are the other gender.
I'm male, so I do not have it. However, you DEFINATELY should get it checked out. History and the symptoms are a strong indicator that something may be wrong. And even if it is not cancerous, it may still be a cyst or something else than would need medical exampination.
Tell your mom the full story. Tell her that you were taking a shower, and your breasts hurt. You found a lump, and are a bit concerned over it.
When your mom gets there, ask her if you could speak to her for a few seconds in private, and let her know it is important. That will let her excuse yourself and you will have the privacy you need.
