anorexic friend...maybe

Question Posted Wednesday April 19 2006, 9:26 pm

my school does assigned seating for lunch period. somehow, the past two times they've assigned new table groups, i've sat with one of the same girls. the entire time ive had lunch period with her, i've never seen her eat more than an apple, or occasionaly she nibbles on one of those 100 calorie packets. when i've asked her about it, she always said she's already eaten, or she's not hungry. she isn't a skinny girl, and she doesn't seem to be losing any weight. still, this doesn't seem healty. i'm not sure what to do, or if i should do anything at all. please help!

Right now, I'm on a low calorie diet. For lunch, I eat a simple fruit salad and a water. I've lost about 8 pounds so far...

It just seems like she's on a similar diet as me, where she is counting what she takes in and limiting herself. I love those snack packs too, they're great for calorie counting.

Don't do anything, it's not really something she seems to need help with in my opinion.

Also, she may not appear to be losing weight but it does take time and sometimes the change is unnoticeable. Just let her do what she wants to, and hopefully it will result in her losing some weight and feeling better about herself :)

Well she might be on a strict diet. A real one. And the foods she eats are more things that she can only eat at home like it has to be cooked. I think you should leave her be. People with eating disorders don't want people they don't know very well talking to them about it. Or she may just not like eating infront of people. I say leave her alone unless you notice a major weight loss in a short time. Good luck to you and her.

Maybe she just doesnt feel comfortable eating around other people. She could have a really big breakfast so that will do her in untill she gets home. Some peopel just dont like when other people watch them eat.

That's not healthy at all. So many people have such distorted ideas about dieting. My guess is that she doesn't understand that this isn't an effective or healthy way to manage her weight. Furthermore, it one of the classic signs of an eating disorder especially since she is lying about already having eaten. I think that you should mention it to a counselor at your school. Make sure the counselor knows that you are not sure of anything, you are just concerned. What you tell a counselor is supposed to be confidential, but tell the counselor not to tell anyone that you came to her about this, just in case. What should happen is the counselor or school nurse will have a talk with her about how what she is doing is not healthy and isn't a good way to lose weight. They'll probably discuss alternate options with her and hopefully she will start eating a better lunch soon. Good luck!

She may be emberrassed to eat like she may feel uncomfortable thats how i get around people im not generally with. Just give her time to ease up and if you truelly have a bad feeling go to your school counsolar. They keep stuff confidential to!

I'm pretty overweight and I do this basically 2 out of 5 days for the week.

I don't think she have an eatin problem because maybe she just feels comfortable eating that amt of food...or yeah maybe she's on a diet
