The gas is much less dense than air, so vocal cords vibrate a lot faster as the gas is released, causing a voice to be higher for a short amount of time.
[Helium gas is not poisonous. It is being used by the divers in deep-sea diving, mixed with oxygen. Breathing with pure helium will make a person pass out because of lack of oxygen. So, when someone breathes oxygen they will easily recover. There are no chemical reactions which occur in the body, and as soon as the helium has escaped, normal respiration begins again. Inhaling helium gas isn't a danger. It's just when people forget that they need oxygen to live that the problems occur.]

Well, if you get some particularily un-pure helium it can cause cancer if you use the un-pure stuff a lot.

It DOES kill brain cells supposedly, but I do it all the time [haha doesn't that explain something]. Just kidding.

It can make you feel light headed if you inhale too much though.

It kills brain cells -- but not many so nothing bad happens. Just dont do it everyday of your life && you'll be fine. ;-)
