Cutting is stress relief. It is fast, easy, and highly effective.

It's not necessarily addicting, but it can be. Typically, people who cut don't have other, "more healthy" coping mechanisms. If they have a persistent problem which leads them to cut on a daily basis, they can easily become dependent on the stress relief, and 'need' to cut in the same way a smoker 'needs' a cigarette when in a stressful situation. I cut, but only occasionally; I'm not addicted.

It is painful, usually. Two thirds of self-injurers say that they experience moderate to severe pain, and the other third say they experience little or no pain. Typically, the ones that don't feel pain cite acute emotional distress as the reason.

Note that cutting yourself is very different than being cut accidentally. If you do it yourself, your perception of the cut is much different; you don't think of it the same way as people do when they hear about somebody else cutting. Also, at least for me, it hurts a lot less. A razor makes a very clean cut; unless it's deep (say, a third of an inch), once I'm finished with the actual cutting I can hardly feel it.

Personally, I can't think of anything wrong with it. It is considered a deviant act, but it hasn't affected me negatively in any way. It does relieve stress, the pain is minor, and I don't mind the scarring. Plus there's all sorts of perhiferal benefits, like lower blood pressure.

If it's life threatenig, or expensive, or if somebody is addicted, then I would consider it a problem. For me though, it's been nothing but a positive experience. I'm not trying to advocate it here, just present a different perspective. There are more useful ways to deal with stress which are also effective.

I have wondered the very same thing ever since I found out one of my very good friends cut. Cutting is very silly and no, it doesn't make sense. When people can't deal with a problem or problems, they tend to turn to repeating or overdoing a specific act. Their problems are driving them literally crazy and they don't know what else to do. Cutting and other negative coping methods give the person a way to deal with and be relieved of their emotional discomfort outside of the problem itself. In a way it lets them feel like they are outside of themselves. Smoking, pill popping, alcohol and cutting are some of the ways that people choose to deal. Eating, exercise, cleaning, cooking, and work are some other routes that people take. Not all of these are bad for your health, but when overdone, all are negative. Someone that cleans the house every time they are upset isn't in danger, but it's the same idea as cutting. It's all about the person's choice. Some people choose negative coping methods, others choose positive, and still others are able to control their temptations. These people don't need anything because they are emotionally stable enough to properly cope with their problems. I have had trouble in the past and will admit to using exercise to deal with my problems. Exercise is a proven way to help deal with stress in a good way, but I overdid it and became dependant on it. Anyways, I hope that you can see now how easy it is to get caught up in cutting and that lots of people have similar emotional weaknesses that they don't really see as problems.

orphans answered Wednesday March 29 2006, 7:16 pm:
Some people do it to replace an emotional (ephemeral) pain with one that is physical (and therefore "real"). An emotional pain is hard to deal with so it is swapped for an outer injury, which is far easier to deal with. It also serves as a reminder of the pain endured, like a battle-scar. If someone experiences a pain so deep, why shouldn't it show? It meant something to them. It can feel better than crying, as it is a more direct way of dealing with the hurt. Some people can cope with physical pain better than misery. The act also releases endorphins, putting the cutter into a mild high. People may also cut for sexual kicks, either by themselves or with a partner.

i really don't think there's any excuse for cutting, like the people who say they do it for the pain. i believe that people do it just for the attention. but that's just me. its pretty stupid any way you look at it

I guess it's where people have had pain and can't take it anymore so they take out the rage and frustration on themselves so they can physically feel the pain and focuss on that instead of the hurt inside. Hope that helped.

It's a non-substance drug, kinda. You know how people will smoke cigarettes, even though they're bad? It's something like that. I guess when you do it, it's like you're relieved by the pain...like you're letting everything out. Maybe once you had a scab, and you picked at it, and even though it was painful, you still kind of liked it. Or maybe you've never done that (I have), but it's something like that. It's really hard to explain.

but i guess it always depends on who it is!

I don't really understand why people do it too. They think that cutting takes away the pain that they are going through, but they don't get that it doesn't. It takes their mind of the problem for about 10 minutes, but in the end they're left with a scar and the issues that they are dealing with. Those people need help and I think it's stupid that they do that. People are so odd.

mystical_breeze answered Wednesday March 29 2006, 5:15 pm:
I think some people do it because it takes your mind off the emotion, like how some people eat when they're depressed and stressed out. When people want to cry, they cut themselves because it hurts, but in a good way to them. It feels better then crying for them. I guess you can't really understand it unless you have the problem with depression, and have cut yourself.

my health teacher explained it this way: if you are like really sad and everything, having something LITTERALLY, it will take your mind off of it. like it you are sick and feeling crappy...you focus on that. but when you get a shot, you forget all that and focus on your arm that hurts. weird, but i hope this helps you understand it better. <3

It's because the physical pain makes them forget about the emotional. Even though they're going to have to deal with it eventually so it's kinda stupid. That's what most kid that cut say though.
