hair loss

Question Posted Wednesday March 22 2006, 6:40 pm

I've been losing alot of hair lately, mainly when I take a shower/bath there is a large amount of hair on top of the drain and when ever I run my hand though my hair there is always a few strands.
so I was wondering if its because of bad nutrition, dying my hair, or from straighting it.
I've died my hair many times before just this time its black. So maybe I'm just seeing all the hair now because its black and not the light brown it was before.
I'm vegan so I know I don't get enough calcium or protein ( I take a multivitamin for everything else ).
So could my hair loss be because of either those three things or some other reason?

Dying and straightening your hair is probably not the problem. The only thing that could make your hair fall out would probably be over-bleaching your hair or dying it too many times in a short period of time.

You should get more vitamins in your diet. I know that some people's bodies can only use vitamins if they come from food, not from pills.

You should talk to a doctor because this could be a sign of a serious problem.

it's probably all three of those things plus the weather.
i lose my hair like crazy during the end of winter start of spring. i dont know why. but it just happens.

you said your are a veggie, and you take pills. that's good. just make sure your getting enough of protien. that's good to help your hair stay in.

dying your hair, it's horrible for your hair. but i know we all do it. so maybe you can lay off of that for a while?

straighting your hair, i do it everyday and im sure that's half the reason why my hair is bad.

so i'd take some extra protien pills, stop dying it, and maybe do other stuff that straighting it a lot?

if it continues, i'd talk to your doctor about it!

It's probaly from a little bit of all three. Bad nutrition defientaly, and anything unnatural thing you do to your hair can weaken it (straighting, dying...)I straighten my hair so i know that messes it up. I'd suggest Garnier Fructis Long&Strong conditioner. I haven't been using it very long and already my hair feels thicker n stronger.

You lose between 100 and 200 hairs a day anyway so don't worry, chances are that you are well within 'normal' territory here.

However, there are a number of things which can cause some hair loss in women.

Iron deficiency can cause it to fall out from the root, in which case you would need to begin iron supplements. Normally an iron deficiency (anaemia) is accompanied by other symptoms like lethargy so if you are concerned you may have this, make sure you see your doctor for some blood tests to confirm it.

Stress can also make your hair fall out. If you've been dealing with a lot of stress lately, this could be the cause, in which case it might be a good idea to exercise more often and perhaps consider taking a calming exercise like yoga or pilates, as these are not high impact exercises. You should also start taking some 'you' time where you pamper and preen yourself or just chill out and do something you enjoy.

Overstyling can play a part in hair loss but generally this causes hair to break, rather than fall out from the root. If you think this could be what's happening, try to invest in a protecting serum or spray for your hair and use it before styling. Also try doing a hair mask once a week and taking more breaks from your heated styling products. A good conditioner and/or a leave in conditioner should also help to reduce breakages.

If it still continues and you've ruled out any of these options, definitely make sure you see your doctor to make sure there's nothing else wrong.

You're right that you might be noticing how much hair you lose normally just because your hair is now black. I have black hair and it's really obvious how much hair I lose.

Try brushing your hair to see if it is thinner than it used to be. That should help you confirm if you're actually losing more hair or just noticing it more because of the colour.

If you are actually losing more hair then you used to, how long has it been since you last dyed it? If the problem didn't start from when you last dyed your hair, then it might be an actual problem and you should see a doctor.

If you dye your hair frequently, it might be irritating your scalp. I would suggest that you keep your hair the way it is until you know what's going on. Don't brush your hair too frequently either, because it pulls your hair out. Only brush to style your hair and to sort it out when it's messy.

If you know that you don't get enough calcium or protein, eat more legumes (such as beans) because they contain more proteins than other vegetables, and they are also a good source of calcium.

Mostly everyone has this, Its all the loose hair. It's not a big deal, but if its coming out and its leaving bald spots you deffinatly need to see a doctor. There is a very rare possibility of it happening since your a vegan, and you take a multivitamin, So i doubt that. It's mostly good to get all your loose hair out. It's just like brushing it. Thats why you see hair in your brush when you brush it. Because a brush takes out the loose hair.

No sweat :]

I'm the same way and when my hair is wet, my hair falls out a lot! I don't have any medical problems and I get nutrients and proteins but my hair still falls out. I also dye my hair a lot but I don't think that's the reason. I read somewhere that it could be from changing shampoos. Try to find one with vitamins in it and condition your hair and just try to keep it healthy.

you can lose it if you are stressed out. ive had this problem before. mine went away and i never got any bald spots. it can be because you dyed your hair alot, because thats not healthy. then again it could be because you arent getting anough nutrition. if this problem persists then i would see a doctor or something.

One of my very close friends was vegan, for about a year. She has a lot of medical problems and if she wouldn't stop she would have gotten organ disfunction; i think her kidneys. I am not telling you to stop being vegan i think it is hard and takes a strong person but she aswell lost some of her hair so that may be why. if it isn't from being vegan it could be from dying your hair to many times which burns and dries it out.

It could be from any of those reasons. It being black could also be the reason you are suddenly noticing it.

So long as you have no bald spots you will probably be OK. If it continues though and gets really bad, go have a doctor check it. You may still be lacking in some vitamin or something. :)
