I have a new hamster. When she is on her wheel, it is really loud. It is keeping everyone up and I was wondering if there was anything I can do. I am going to try to find a different wheel, but I am not sure if there are any quiet ones out there. Does anyone know what I can do for right now, until I can find a new wheel?
decemberbaby answered Friday March 3 2006, 9:06 pm: as you probably figured out, hamsters are nocturnal so they stay up all night. my hamsters wheel does they same thing. i have two closets, one for clothes, and the other has my desk. i used to put him on my desk and shut the doors and no one wouuld heart anything. you probably dont have a desk in a closet, so maybe you can put him/her in a bathroom or something. oh yeah, and i dont think there are many quiet wheels. his wasnt, you'd be lucky to have one!
hope everything works out!

Vegetable Oil. Put it where the wheel meets the stand. DO NOT use any other oil besides the kinds we use for food (vegetable oil, olive oil) because anything else could be toxic to your hamster.

I didn't change her wheel but I did the same thing that the previous columnists said. I put vegtable oil on the bottom of the wheel and it didn't make noise. But before you get a new wheel you can also try putting the cage into a different room? Hamsters are usually active at night and sleep during the day. [ Teza's advice column | Ask Teza A Question ]
orphans answered Friday March 3 2006, 4:36 pm: put oil/grease on the wheel. when i used to have one, my mom would put on olive oil on a weekly basis. the hamster also liked the olive oil, and it was good for her diet! [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]

Good luck with your hamster!! Aren't they adorable? :)
ncblondie answered Friday March 3 2006, 3:43 pm: We ran into a similar problem with my sister's hamster. You can try moving the cage to a room where it's less likely to be heard. Another option is simply removing the wheel at night when everyone is sleeping. We tried moving the cage, but it could be heard anywhere in the house. Finally, we started removing the wheel at night, which worked perfectly. The hamster learned to do its running during the day. [ ncblondie's advice column | Ask ncblondie A Question ]

But what i use to do was put oil on the wheel you have remember to keep puting it on but its worth it.
t0xicParadiSe answered Friday March 3 2006, 1:40 pm: I used to have a hamster and I had the same exact problem.
What I did was put oil on the wheel, like at the bottom of the turning part.
You can also buy a metal wheel if you don't already have that one because I had no problems with that kind of wheel.
xEVYx answered Friday March 3 2006, 10:44 am: my brother had this problem. if the wheel is squeaking or w.e put some kind of vegetable oil on the part where it turns so it'll go smoothly. or set something up under it where it goes around in a complete circle. my brothers went kinda sideways & it wobbeled. thats why it made noise. good luck
happy-helper answered Friday March 3 2006, 10:42 am: Why not go to the pet shop and tell your problem to one of the staff there. I'm sure they will understand and may able to recommend a quieter and better wheel for your hamster.
Best of luck!
