My voice sucks! (For experienced singers ONLY!)

Question Posted Wednesday January 25 2006, 5:16 pm

Here's the deal: I love singing. I've been singing since 4th grade and I've been in choirs since 5th. I haven't taken voice lessons.

Now, I want to sing a song for a talent show, but my only problem is... MY VOICE IS HORRIBLE. I have experience, but it's just the way it SOUNDS, do you know what I mean?

I recorded my voice on my cell phone, and I got so depressed at the way it sounds.

What can I do? Will singing lessons help at all? Thanks!

if you record it on your cell phone, it will not sound like it is realistic, and it will always sound worse then your real voice. also, almost everyone hates the sound of their own voice. if you really are a bad singer, then singing lessons will help

Hello!

First thing, NEVER record your voice on an amateur tape recorder, a mobile/cell phone, or anything else which isn't professional music equipment if you're going to take it as your actual voice. They are very misleading and made me think that I had a bad voice a few years ago when I actually have a good voice. Those recorders are good for a laugh or just for fun, but shouldn't be depended on.

Maybe you should ask a close family member or friend about opinions about your voice. Ask for honest opinions and be sure to accept criticism. Everything gets better with practice. Don't get depressed with negative responses, even the best singers have bad days and maybe what they tell you will be useful for improving.

I can tell that you really love singing. =) As I haven't taken singing lessons I don't want to judge them, but I think that a lot of it is around opera. Depending on what you like singing, this might be good or bad for you.

I'm not sure if singing lessons will improve your voice because I have no experience with them, but some other Advicenators have posted about lessons. Maybe you should read their opinions about them. =)

Lastly, don't judge yourselves on other singers. Just because you don't sing like most popular singers doesn't make you bad. Maybe you're confused.

Enjoy singing!

I've been singing since I was two! I've never taken lessons either (i keep telling my parents to get me them...)But i was in a talent show at my school last year as well! Because I want lessons so badly, i've done a lot of research:
first of all, singing lessons don't give you a better voice than the one you have now. it helps you train it. You learn to read music and breathe correctly, etc. Secondly, if you've really been singing that long, it can't be terrible!!! IM me at tengrls2colors and i can help you over a mic! that's how i got help from my friends last year! The only thing you can do for now is keep practicing and listen to the way the singer of the song does it! I'm sure your not bad! xoxoxo, i hope this helps!

singing lessons only widen you voice box you need to find a singing style that doesnt make your voice sound like shit like country or rap you know find the right one and you will rule the mic

Everyone has pretty much already covered the cellphone topic. And of course taking lessons can help you improve in almost any area; but what no one's mentioned is that your voice is probably pretty awesome just the way it is.

Sure an operatic voice is sweet and pretty, but how interesting is that? Some of the most influential vocalists of all time haven't been "good singers". Just look at Bob Dylan. He has a nasly scratchy, quite arguably horrible singing voice and yet no one's begging him to quit singing.

Having a distinctive voice is what sets people apart. It's what makes people remember you. It's what makes rock stars out of average joes...and I should know, since I'm a rock star.

okay first off cell phones give off crapy sound. try singing into a good tape recorder. voice lessons might help, but they mainly teach you opera. if you get a voice coach they are more able to teach you how to breath in the write spot and help your voice. so it all depends on what youre aiming for.

On your cell phone? Sweetheart, that would make ME sound bad and I've been in national competitions. I love my voice, but I recorded it myself once and cried because I thought I was terrible. Then I had it recorded with professional equipment, and I was like "...oh. I guess I don't sound that bad...cool..."
To hear your own voice properly, you need like, actual recording equipment. Talking and singing are way different recording-wise, and cell phones don't do justice to singing, no matter how good you are. If you're good, it'll record buzzing because there's too much resonance. If you're bad, it'll record you worse.
You probably don't know what your own voice sounds like, but if it sounds bad to you and you want to improve it, voice lessons will definitely help, as long as your teacher knows what he or she is doing. I teach a little - one of my students had a range of about an octave. But supporting right and opening up she had about two octaves.
Voice lessons improve everyone. I was once not nearly as good as I am now, but I improve constantly, and it's a good feeling. Lessons are definitely not on the cheap side if you have a good teacher, but I think they're worth it, if it's what you love.
Part of it could be your age, too. If your voice is a bit airy, that's normal and it should go away as long as you don't ruin your chords. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I say go for the lessons.
Good luck!
-Siren =)

First of all, I am not an experienced singer, but I'm going to answer anyway.

As for the cell phone recording, that isn't quite accurate. If people seem to cringe when you sing, than your voice is probably bad because, hey, not everyone can have a beautiful voice. I know I don't. Voice lessons may improve some of your skills, but your singing voice doesn't have a huge chance of completely turning around. And lessons are EXPENSIVE. But if your talent show dream is that important to you.. go for it.
