question for guitar players. (preferibly guys) and slipknot<

Question Posted Tuesday January 10 2006, 1:30 am

Im a girl, so i already know i'll suck more at guitar then guys. But, i'd like to start getting into guitars because music is one of my passions. I have long slender fingers so will that be an advantage when playing guitar? Okay well my question is, i want to play the song "vermilion pt. 2" on guitar, and I think its acoustic. I looked up the tabs. It said acoustic i think. Well anyways i was looking up acoustic guitars on google, and i also looked up electric guitars. And acoustic guitars are ugly! So, whats the difference between acoustic and electric guitars? Electric looks easier, but i dont know much when it comes to guitar. Please let me know as much info as possible, from experience would be even better. Im a beginner (only played like a couple times and sucked). Thanks so much this is something i wanna get into. THANKS<333

When i first started playing i really sucked and i couldn't wait to be able to pick a guitar like willie nelson and the eagles.I thought that it just came easy but it dont the guitar is something that takes alot of time and patience. If i was you id get the feel for the electric and the acoustic.Never put a limit on what you can do.Especially music wise i play country rock classical i enjoy it all so take your time learn the chords and youll get get it.hope i helped!

Hey hon.
I'm a classical guitar player, and I've been playing for quite a while now. I'm a girl, like you, and music is my only source of oxygen. Anyway. It's SO much better if you start off with an acoustic guitar to learn the basics. I played the acoustic for like 7 years, then when I touched an electric one for the first time, I rocked like hell. The only difference between the acoustic and the electric one is the sound and the feel of the strings. Electric guitar strings are much thinner and sometimes cut your fingers, and the sound's much easier to control 'cause you've got the amp and all the other technological crap. You also use the pick while playing the electric guitar - which I find extremely difficult. I prefer using my fingers. It's like having 4 picks instead of one.
I seriously recommend that you start with an acoustic one first, just to learn the basics, then you can move on from there. Who cares if acoustic guitars are ugly? It's the talent and passion that counts, not the fact that your guitar's Easter yellow (mine is). Have you seen the Gibson acoustic guitars? They're gorgeous!

Anyway, hope I helped.
Rock on.

Electric is well... electric. You plug it into an amp and it gives a rock sound. Acoustic is not electric, and its ver soft and mellow. Electric is used in more songs, so you might want that. Or start with electric, then get an acoustic later.

Just because you are a girl does NOT mean you'll suck at guitar, in comparision to anyone, and as a girl I'm vergeing on offended because of what you said, but you're probably just ignorant, so I'll let you slide.

there is a slight sound difference between the two, and electric is a tiny bit easier because you don't need to reach around the soundbox and it's just generally smaller.

Practice is important, if you don't practice you'll suck compared to guys AND girls.

Why do guys play better than girls?

They don't.

While it might not be quite your style, familiarize yourself with the likes of Nancy Wilson of Heart or Lita Ford of the Runnaways and her own metal band.

Having larger hands / longer fingers is always a boon to a prospective guitarist.

As for the differnce between an acoustic and an electric... well... one is acoustic and the other is electric... :P Seriously, though - the actoustic doesn't use pickups to generate its sound - the sound is that of the strings and the vibrations resonating inside the hollow body of the instrument. Yes, acoustics can be amplified by internal pickups or microphones.

Electics don't require the hollow sound chamber of the acoustic - they use magnetic coil pickups to convert the vibration of the strings into electic current which is then conveyed through an amplifier to create the full sound.

Acoustic and electic, as far as learning to play goes, are very similar - an acoustic might have a higher string tension, making them feel harsh with the steel strings used on both instruments.

I generally recommend a classical guitar for starters - yeah, the sound is not what you're looking for, but the neck is flat, the strings are nylon (much easier on the fingers at first) and the strings are spaced further apart than on electics and acoustics.

That said, if you want the electric sound, you're only going to be happy with an electric - just remember that when you have an electric that a shitty amplifier will make a great guitar sound like ass - but a great amplifier can make a shitty guitar sound decent.

I'm a girl. There seems to be a double standard against girls playing guitar or bass or drums, and that needs to be thrown away, so you don't need to say that "You'll suck more at guitar than guys" because its not true.

Anydirection, to answer your question, acoustic and electric guitars sound VERY different. "Swing Life Away" by Rise Against is played on an acoustic guitar. Most other rock songs are played on electric, you should be able to tell the difference. Not one is easier than the other, but I started out on an acoustic because you can just pick it up and play it, instead of having to learn about amps, and effect pedals, and the works. The only thing thats going to make you better is to pick up a guitar and practice, practice, practice. Just like with any other instrument, you're not going to learn it overnight.

Good luck! If you've got anymore guitar questions, then don't be shy to leave one in my inbox!

well im a girl. and i play an electric guitar.
the only differnce between acoustic and electric is the sounds. one isnt easyer then the other either. theyre both guitars, theyre both goin to be the same level of difficulty. like i said the only differnce is sound. i started out with an electric. it doesnt matter what you start out with either. if you like the sound of acoustics more get an acoustic if you like electrics more get an electric. you can do all the same things on an electric as you can an acoustic and even more as far as the sounds and what not but i wont go into that since your just beggining. so yea its really your choice. and your not gunna be able to just play a tab right away. guitar isnt as easy as it looks. trust me. you gotta practice and practice till you cant anymore! so dont be dissapointed if you suck for about a year or two. truuustt mmee!! but yea hope i helped a little.

oh yea and also. just cause your a girl doesnt mean your gunna automatically suck. guys arnt better at guitar then girls just cause theyre guys. girls wont "suck" more at guitar just cause theyre girls. guys just have more of a repuatation to play guitars so thats probibly why you think that. but dont. cause one its not cool and two its not true.

but anywho. good luck! and have fun. :]

michelle<3

oh yea and i forgot to add about the slender finger thing. it really doesnt matter. my friend is super skinny and she has really slender fingers too but its hard for her to get her fingers in position where as for me its easy for me to position my fingers. (idk what youd call my fingers skinny/slender/fat/chubby w/e idk but you can see them in my pic so you be the judge). so really it doesnt matter if your fingers are fat or skinny its just the way you play. youll see once you start playing more. :] good luck again!

Firstly, don't start out thinking that because you are a girl you'll be any better or worse than a guy at playing guitar. There are many good female bands and guitarists around. Yes having long, slender fingers is an advantage when playing guitar because you can get your hands into the shapes to play chords easier and will probably find it easier to play solos.

The main thing about acoustic guitars is that they are big and bulky, but not all of them are (you may need to look hard to find them but you can get slimline acoustic guitars with necks basically the same as an electric), you might find it better to look at electro-acoustic (or semi-acoustic) guitars, they look better and are styled to handle more like electric guitars than acoustic ones.

If you really want to get into this don't let anyone or anything put you off and take some lessons and practice.

Good luck
