Question Posted Thursday December 29 2005, 7:15 pm
I was shopping yesterday and I bought a shirt and my total was 17 dollars and something cents. Well I grabbed into my wallet and thought I pulled out a 20 and gave it to the casher.
I don't know if she wasn't paying attention or what but after she put the bill into the register, she asked me what I gave her. I said it was a 20 because I thought it was.
When I was at home I was looking through my wallet and I REALIZED THAT I GAVE HER A 100 DOLLAR BILL!
Now I don't know if it's too late to go back tomorrow and see if I can get my money back. Would they give it to me??

Dr_Chad answered Friday December 30 2005, 10:29 pm: If you gave her 100 dollars, her drawer will be 80 over. If the manager is honest, he will return your eighty dollars. Also, often there is a video camera trained on the counter and register, which should show her putting the bill in the cash drawer. If you gave her a c-note, and she put it where it belongs, that will be evident on the tape, proving it was you who gave her the extra 80 bucks.
Finally, as a side note, cashiers are supposed to lay bills sideways across the cash drawer while they make change, and only place the bills in the drawer afterward, simply to protect the business from scam artists who like to claim they gave the cashier a bigger bill. Had this girl followed protocol, she wouldn't have had to ask you what you gave her, and she would have given you the correct change. It's so hard to find decent help these days. Good luck. babiigirl answered Friday December 30 2005, 12:32 am: Everyday they balance and check the money. if they dont come out to a certain amount and if they are $83 over there is a problem. And the fact that she asked you what you handed her its a good thing she should always know what she was handed. I always do atleast. cause im a cashier.
You should deff. go back and ask to speak with the manager or the person that was in charge yesterday. then tell them what happened. if he/she says that the count was over by $83 dollars then he/she might give it to you. if its not over you will prob have to ask the cashier who rang you up andwatch the tapes. Chicken_flavored_eggs answered Thursday December 29 2005, 7:58 pm: You can give it a shot, but honestly, your chances might not be that great.
Every cashier has to balance their drawer and turn it in. If you had given her a Franklin she would have been 83 or so dollars over. She may have talked to her manager about it, which if I remember correctly from my cashiering days was mandatory for a abnormalities.
It is unknown what was done about that. She may have found it and just pocketed the extra. Or they may have done something else with the money. It all depends on who was handling your money and what store you were at.
DangerWench answered Thursday December 29 2005, 7:44 pm: Well, I could be wrong... BUT...
The fact that she asked you what you handed her, isn't a good sign. She should know exactly what you handed her, as different bills go in different slots in the drawer, and it was only a single bill you handed her. If she put it in the 20 slot, she could have just looked down to see what it was and that it didn't belong there.
It sounds to me like she tucked it away into the 100 slot, noticed you were distracted with something (or maybe heard you say something about a 20 at some point) and then decided to try to see if she could pocket an extra $80.
If you go to the store, talk to the manager and ask them if they had an $80 surplus when they were counting out the receipts for that day. If they did, you may be able to get your money back, since you knew that. If they didn't, the clerk probably pocketed it. Your only hope then is that a surveillance camera caught the whole thing. Razhie answered Thursday December 29 2005, 7:34 pm: It is worth going back to the store and checking with them. Most retail stores balance their registers at the end of the night and they would definitely notice an extra $80 dollars in their till.
Bring back your receipt, with an explanation and a friendly smile. It's your mistake as well as the cashiers, and the nicer you are about it, the more likely they'll be able to help you. [ Razhie's advice column | Ask Razhie A Question ]
betterthanyou_X3 answered Thursday December 29 2005, 7:19 pm: It wouldn't hurt to try. Tell them about it and if they don't believe you, ask them to look at the money they collected today (if you're going tomarrow) to see if there's a 100 in there. There might be more than one so if you remember anything about it that might help. Like if you remember a purple mark on it or something.
If nothing else, they should probably notice that they have an extra 80$ from that day. You should probably start with that; ask them about the extra 80$ first.
There's a big chance you might not be able to get it back though. If you still have time to go tonight I would do that. Make sure in the future you always look at the bill before you give it to the person. [ betterthanyou_X3's advice column | Ask betterthanyou_X3 A Question ]

Do you have your recipt [sp]? If so maybe you could take it back to the store and tell them what happend. Cause I'm sure they would have noticed after they balanced their Drow.
LoveNJstyle answered Thursday December 29 2005, 7:18 pm: she asked you what the bill was before she looked at it? honestly, i don't think you're going to get your money back. the chick probably kept the $80 bucks since it didnt mention anywhere that you gave her a $100. go back as soon as you can if you still think there's hope tho! <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]
BL0NDExAMBiiTii0N answered Thursday December 29 2005, 7:17 pm: they might give it back to you if they look on the security cameras and if they're able to see whether it was a $20 bill or a $100 bill. they'll probably give it back to you .. definitely if they know that it was a 100 and not a twentyy .. make sure you bring the receipt and maybe the shirt & it's tag? idk if the shirt would help, but the receipt most likely would. good luckk! ♥ :D [ BL0NDExAMBiiTii0N's advice column | Ask BL0NDExAMBiiTii0N A Question ]
