Will power vs. Mentality?

Question Posted Thursday December 29 2005, 1:07 am

I'm a 19 year old female. I'm 5'3'' and weigh 135 pounds. Ever since I was 16 I've wanted to lose weight. I've been going to the gym at times 5-6 days a week for 3 months then I see no results AT ALL and stop going. I've been the same weight for 3-4 years. I've tried cutting back on calories but and it seems to be working well until night time. Then it is like I can't control myself and have to eat, if I see it I want it, if i know its in the cabinent I want it. I know I just need to tell myself no but has this happened to anyone else?!?! I restrick myself during the day but after dinner I lose it and undo my diet. I honestly need help...i was thinking of wearing a bracelet as a reminder to feel guilty or something when im bingeing

Dear Will-Power,
Those night-time cravings are the worst, I know. :) I am a 19 year old girl, and I lost 20 pounds this past summer. Instead of restricting yourself, make smarter choices about what you eat. Food that is good for you can also fill you up. Try to eat less red meat, and go with chicken and turkey. Try to not eat any foods that have been fried. What has helped me with my night-time cravings is that I eat well during the day. I have a healthy, filling breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I drink plenty of water and tea throughout the day. This makes it so you are not so hungry and unsatisfied at night. By eating right before you go to bed, you put a lot of calories into your body that your body can't really burn off right away (because you're sleeping). Instead, eat well throughout the day, so your body can work on burning those calories away while you're awake. Don't do this to lose weight, however, because you are at a pretty healthy weight for your height and age (and I'm sure you're beautiful!) I realized that eating is just a series of choices that you make, so always try to be conscious of the choices that you make! Just let me know if there's anything I can do for you!
Jenny

The reason why you are crashing on this diet at night is because you are keeping your blood sugar levels in check which control your hunger. This means you are not getting enough calories to begin with. Our bodies require a certain amount of calories each day just to function. This maintenance forumula can be calculated by multiplying your bodyweightx15. In order to gain weight, adding 500-700 calories to this total is ideal and the opposite is true while losing weight. You cannot eat like a bird while losing weight because then your body restricts what it has in the first place and holds subcanteous fluids underneath the skin. I would suggest getting in at least 4-5 SMALL meals a day spaced out in 3-4 hour increments so that blood sugar levels stay in check and your body does not crave salty and/or sugary snacks. "Telling yourself" to do it just isn't enough...you have to take the proper acts in your diet to prevent it because if your body craves it...It will get it. Remember- You're the guardian of your body, not it's prisoner.

You should eat more during the day so your not hungry at night. Dont eat after 6 or 7 every day, and go to sleep at a reasonable time. This will cause you to burn calories while your awake. When you eat right before you go to sleep, it just turns into fat. Hope i helped.

First of all, if you see something you want that is okay but if you eat alot that is okay too because at least your going to the gym. You should not want to lose weight or go on a diet because your normal. But you can still go to the gym. But if you keep eating and going to the gym your healthy and you can keep eating!

I'm 5'4 and I weigh 200 lbs so you have nothing to worry about. If you really feel that you need to lose weight to feel better than do everything you can to get to your desired weight.

There are a lot more women in the world that look like us than who look like super models that you see in magazines and on television.

jeez dude. you sound perfectly fine and normal where you are. what i don't understand is the mentality behind this wanting to lose weight business. i've known several girls who turn to anorexia or bulimia or intense excersizing in the hope of losing weight and it always ends the same way she keeps going and going and then her parents or friends find out and then her life becomes this closeley watched mess and she looks like some sort of stressed out caged animal whose deprived itself of food all in the hopes of looking better when she looked damn fine to begin with and didn't need to lose any weight. honey what you have is not the inability to diet, or the inability to control yourself. you have a stomach that needs to be fed and maintained. there's nothing wrong with eating and living healthy that's fine and dandy. but trying not to eat in the hopes of losing some weight is tapering on the edge of anorexia and real trouble. just eat, drink, and be happy. i grew up in a house where half the time we didn't know if we'd get a next meal so we ate when we had food. you're not in that situation you have it readily available so take advantage of it and don't force yourself to do something that you know is not a smart choice. starving yourself, fasting, whatever else is not a good idea, it's a terrible notion and one that could easily be your downfall. don't play with that kinda fire it's certainly not safe.
