Labels aren't going away. If you dress a certain way, you will be given a certain label. There's nothing you can do about it so you might as well either accept it or just not listen. Why does it bother you anyways? If someone calls you something you don't think you are, tell them why you aren't.

Dear Labeled,
Your never going to get people to change and sometimes it does matter what people think, or you wouldn't be here, right? Do you know who you are? That is really all that matters. People think that you are goth? So what. Let them think what they want. When you see someone walking around your school, you perceive them of being a certain type, right? He is a jock. She is a prep. They are geeks. You get the picture. As humans we label people so that we get a better perspective of who we are. You have found that you are not goth, punk, or emo. If it bothers you, then next time someone labels you, tell them who you really are. Good luck. ♥ Miss Moo

Most of these answers say you should change your style... well i think that's stupid. I'm exactly in the same position you are, my friends call me emo, strangers call me goth or punk... anyhow.

don't change your style. if you don't want to be labelled just tell them. or make a joke out of it.

glare at them.

ask them what they are. "I'm 'Goth'? well who are you?" and they'll say their name and jsut say "well I'm ___, not 'Goth'."

Ugh wow I have your problem so much. The best word of advice I can give you is to...well basically be yourself. Maybe get a shirt that says "I dont label dont label me" and tell your friends that you aren't some labeled can you are a deep caring person inside. Tell everyone to stop judging the outer layers. I hate when everyone can look at someone in all black and randomly say "o there depressed, there gothic, there punk" or whatever and then even the so called "preppys" are all in pink and slutty. No everyone is different and people really need to realize this! Sorry to ramble it just ticks me off

ugh, i hate labels too. What you need to do is not bring it up a lot. People are gonna label you, you cant change that. But by not thinking of it, you'll get by.

No offense but if your dressing "goth, emo, skater" or whatever your must likely going to be labeled that...thats your own fault. What do u expect people to consider you a "prep or a gangster"??? I know it sux but if you want to be looked upon differently then your going to have to dress differently..because you cant change everybodys opinion of what they see you as.

If you wear the clothing of an 'emo,' you're going to have a hard time convincing people that you're not. If you wear the clothing and you act like it, then you are. You shouldn't hate labels, labels are nothing more than statistics. Labels are formed because they are the majority. If you're so afraid of being put under a label, then there is some deeper lying emotional problems here.
Lastly, if your friends, who know you past what you wear, call you emo; you're probably emo.

No matter what you wear, the way you talk & act, people will always seem to give you a label. As much as you want people to stop, they won't. I get called prep, stuck up, spoiled, snotty, just because of the way I dress. I learned to get over it and just to deal with the immature people. I'm not gonna change the style of my clothing just so people can stop labeling me. I hate labels, but I came to the conclusion where it's normal now. You can't make people stop calling you that, but just tell them that that is who you are and that's what you like to dress like. Your friends should understand where you are comming from. Just talk to them again and make sure they know you are serious. For the other people who don't know you, screw them. They're wrong and they're just being very immature.

t0xicParadiSe answered Sunday December 11 2005, 9:47 pm:
Every one has different thoughts towards different things.

Some one may be walking down the street wearing a shirt, jeans, and a hoodie from A & F. That doesn't always mean that they are preppy. They might just be wearing the outfit because they find it comfortable.
From another person's point of view, they are going to assume that the person walking down the street is automatically a prep.

Putting a label on people is just like judging them with out getting to know them first.
No one can change what a person thinks.

So dress the way you feel comfortable with and just ignore what people think of you and/or label you as because you can't really do anything about it but just ignore it.
If you waste your time explaining to them that you are not a goth chances are they are not
going to listen to you or think differently.

i would say keep the style.. but if you wear like black eyelinner... change it up and wear more colorful eye linner and maybe brighten up your face so it's not so black you know? and if you have black hair.. (naturally or dyed) i would change it and if it's natural get like blonde highlights and if it's dyed.. dye it back to it's original color or soemtihg.. usually if you just like brighten up everything it won't make everyone automatically think that your a goth or emo =] i really hope i helped and if you 'need anymore suggestions or anythign else just let me know =] plus if you need anythign further =]

For starters what you wear, and how your style is, is always going to influence the opinions of others before even talking to you. You're automatically always going to be sterotyped.

It's nothing you can really stop, that's just how people think and act and such =/
