Question Posted Thursday December 8 2005, 10:49 pm
Last year my Pre-Cal teacher told me that if I went on to take Calculus AP that I would flunk out by first report card. I knew that I wouldn't and the only reason I decided to take the class was because she said that about me even though I kept an A+ average in her class. Well, it's coming around to the end of the semester and I now have an A in Calculus AP. I was wondering; if this happened to you, would you tell your old teacher about your grade?
OnlyTheRightAnswers answered Friday December 9 2005, 1:37 pm: Personally, I would not go to visit her, but if you happen to pass her in the hallway say nonchalantly, "Oh yeah. I actually decided to take AP Calculus this year. I'm doing pretty well actually..I got an A for the first marking period." and then just walk away...don't give her a chance to say anything more, just let it sink in for her that she was wrong. When my mom was younger her guidance counselor told her that she wasn't smart enough to become a teacher and should go to college for something else. She ended up going for horticulture and after, I think two years, she switched to teaching and has been teaching for more than 10 years now and is a very good teacher. It's great that you did so well, that's a really great accomplishment, but is that teacher really worth your time? I think your old teacher probably knows that you're doing well. Even though you may want to go up to her and tell her how it is, I think you should be the mature one and not sink to her level. She probably expects you to come barging in and has something already planned out to say to make you look silly. Don't even give that teacher the time of day. I hope I helped and good luck! Besides actually going back and saying "Just figured I'd tell you, I am getting an A in AP Calc unlike how you said I'd fail." This could pose to be a very awkward situation. How would you lead up to the conversation and how would you end it? You have a great clincher, but do you see how this could be awkward for you?
You should definitely be proud that you are getting an A when the teacher said you'd fail. However, your reasoning for taking the class shouldn't be solely to prove the teacher wrong. Be proud that you got this grade because you are intelligent, and your resume for college will look great. Spend your time thinking about that, rather than proving that teacher wrong.
If you truly want to go back and say "Hey, you were wrong." Then think about how you want to do it first. I wouldn't suggest doing that because I am a person who believes that something that far in the past should be left there, in the past. You know you're great in the class, you know you proved that teacher wrong.. would it really make you feel so proud to go and rub it in her face?
These are just some things to think about. I hope I helped you out. Good luck with the rest of your classes and I hope you pull a great grade on the AP exam. [ fireflysam's advice column | Ask fireflysam A Question ]
livingLIKEloversxx answered Thursday December 8 2005, 10:55 pm: Yes, i would. Its perfect. The teacher who assumed you would fail was absoluteley wrong. She said you weren't smart eough to be in an AP class. And what do you know, your recieving an A. Go back and visit her, talk about how your year is going. and when your about to leave, say "oh, just to let you know, im getting an A in calculus AP.." Goshh, i would love to have a chance to do that. [ livingLIKEloversxx's advice column | Ask livingLIKEloversxx A Question ]
