Question Posted Thursday November 10 2005, 7:36 pm
Hey,
I'm 16 and I want to try contact lenses. My optician says it's all OK. I was just wondering if anyone had any really good/bad experiences with contact lenses they could tell me about, or if there are tips any of you might have? Are they really weird to get used to? I have a real thing about touching my eyes, I don't like it at all. Will I find this really difficult? What happens if you can't get it out?

when you see the doc he should give you a sample pair. try them if you like them then you can buy more. i recomend that you see you optometrist to teach you how to wear them cause they are a great help and know how it feels to be a first timer. even if it costs money its worth it.
yes contacts make your eyes worse in the long run but if you wear them only when you need them it will be okay. talk to your optometrist about it. you wont be the only one to of askes. they know what it is like and can give you some great tips. [ sgran20's advice column | Ask sgran20 A Question ]

its not that hard to put them in once you get used to it. when i first got mine the doctor spent 1/2 an hour showing me how to put them in, and that helped a lot. most places do this for free but if you have to pay, you could just have a friend whos been wearing contacts for a while show you.
you'll be able to get it out. at that little help session, they showed me how to get the contact out too. all you do is slide it to the side of your eye, and then pull it out. it also, even if people say it can, can NOT get stuck behind your eye. it can get stuck, but it happens very rarely.
i have tips:
1) If possible, get Daily contacts. They hurt a lot less, and if you lose/break one, its not as bad because it was only for that day.
2) If your perscriptions for your eyes aren't exactly the same, but they are only like .25 apart, just get the smallest. for instance, if you have 3.00, and 3.25, just get 3.00 for both eyes, because that will make it easier to remember which one goes in which eye.

i have contacts. and i've gotten bad experiences out of them.
i have headaches and neck aches all the time
and my vision has gotten worse.
but that's just the side effects contacts has had on me.. for most people nothing bad happens
just make sure you take them out every night, and re-wet your eyes some times with the drops.
they arent to weird to get used to. some days are better then others.
isntlifegreat answered Friday November 11 2005, 8:15 pm: My brilliant advice:
I've never had contact lenses because my mom says that she's had really bad experiences with them as a teeenager. She said that:
1. It's a lot of work to clean them all the time.
2. They ruined her eyes.
3. Glasses are pretty darn hot these days.(lol)
So if you think that you're ready for the responsibility and the risk then go for it. But i'd suggest thinking a little bit about the consequences first, good and bad. Hope I Helped! [ isntlifegreat's advice column | Ask isntlifegreat A Question ]

Vendetta answered Friday November 11 2005, 2:14 am: Well, you might find it difficult if you have a problem with touching your eyes. It might take a while to put in at first, but it is worth it. I've had contacts for years, and I've only had one problem. I couldn't put them on for a while due to allergies and some medication I was currently taking. All in all, I like contacts better than glasses though. Be sure to clean them good before you use them though, if you don't then it will probably sting once it is in your eye. The only bad problem ive had is one time i accidently didnt rinse my hands that well and when i went to take the contact out i got soap in my eye and it really wasnt a good feeling lol it hurts. BAD!
Getting the contact out is the least of your worries thats the easiest thing. Putting them in for the first week is what may be a little difficult but other than that contacts are perfectly fine.
hope i helped =] [ bNicolex3's advice column | Ask bNicolex3 A Question ]
mystical_breeze answered Thursday November 10 2005, 10:53 pm: If you can't touch your eyes, then you won't be able to wear contacts. It will bother you every time you put them on, so you have to be able to touch your eyeball in order to put contacts on. Contacts aren't so bad, and most of the time you can't even feel them. sizzlinmandolin answered Thursday November 10 2005, 10:37 pm: I have contacts and I love them. The best tip I can give you is not to look at the contact as it's going into your eye. Look down and towards your nose with the eye that you're putting the contact into. You can barely even feel it when you put it on the side of your eye. Once it touches let go and blink a lot. If I had known this before I went it wouldn't have take three hours haha, I had a really hard time. Contacts are not hard to get used to, but you will have some trouble putting them in to begin with. Make sure that there's nothing on it, like dust or an eyelash because that hurts like crazy. Once you get the contacts in for the first time it won't be difficult anymore, but you may have a little trouble sometimes. The only reason you wouldn't be able to get it out is because it's dry. There are special eye drops that you can put over your contacts to make them moist again. If you put the drops in the corner of your eye and let the liquid drip across your eye that won't hurt at all either. Contacts are really great things, but they do take some practice to perfect. I hope that you have an easy time with them and good luck! [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]
DaNcE_In_ThE_RaIn answered Thursday November 10 2005, 10:09 pm: Contacts the first week were really hard to get used to, but don't give up! Once you're used to them it's really easy. Don't be afraid of them not being able to come out because they always do! Sometimes they go to the side a little bit if you rub your eyes too hard but its no biggie they always come out [ DaNcE_In_ThE_RaIn's advice column | Ask DaNcE_In_ThE_RaIn A Question ]

xXxpinky615xXx answered Thursday November 10 2005, 8:30 pm: It takes about a week to get used to putting them in and taking them out, but it's really all worth it.
You just have to make sure your hands are clean before you put your contacts in, and make sure they aren't inside out. Your eyedoctor will show you which way is inside out and which way isn't. THey will show you how to put them in, which way is easiest etc. For the first few days you will find this difficult. But I promise you WILL get used to it.
If you cant' get them out, which happens sometimes but not that often, just put eyedrops in your eyes, keep your eye closed for a few minutes and rub your eye then try taking it out again. NEVER shower with contacts on, they get stuck to your eye and it's extremely uncomfortable.
If you aren't comfortable touching your eyes, then I honestly wouldn't suggest getting contacts, because you obviously have to touch your eye every day twice a day if not more than that.
