Well, I know you know the expense, but the truth of it is, not everybody can afford a horse. My parents can't so I lease three amazing horses. (No it isn't more expensive because we don't pay for one, one I half lease, and the other I lease for shows and lessons so I really only pay for the half lease.) If I were you, I'd sit down with your parents and ask them to tell you exactly why they won't buy you a horse and believe them when they say it isn't so you are unhappy. Also, even if you could get money out of your UGMA account to buy him or her, that would only cover about 1/4 of the cost during the first year alone. Have you considered vet fees, farrier bills...food?

The next thing I want to address is that owning a horse isn't everything. 6 out of the 8 people from my barn who I showed with today lease the horse they rode and nobody thinks we are worse than the ones the own. In fact, the ones that leased generally place higher in their classes. Also, it doesn't change how much we love our horses. Take me and my pony who I don't pay for, for example. I've had so many people think I own him and they have almost all told me that they have never seen a person love her pony as much as me and that love is returned. Leasing is perfect, especially when the situation is right. I take care of him (my pony) and can ride him every day for the price of a half lease at my barn. Think about the horse situation you are in right now. Do you take lessons on what you consider the best school horse in the world? Do you (will you) lease the best pony you've ever ridden? Think about how much you love him or her, and then think that if you had your own horse, you wouldn't be able to ride him or her. Yes, the glass is half full.

Third, things are usually better when we have to work for them. If you get the horse of your dreams in the near future or in twenty years, you will probably enjoy him or her ewven more because you knew you had to work and it was what you always wanted. For instance, my trainer (a very much loved and praised trainer not only by her students but also by many other trainers and horse people) got her start because she wanted a horse so badly when she was about 12 that she started riding a cow. When her uncle saw that, he got her a pony to lease, but even that was for the summer only. Another adult rider at my barn (specilizes in training green horses)didn't own her first horse until she was almost thirty. Therefore, don't be discouraged if you can't have a horse now.

Sorry that was so long but I hope I helped!

I know you don't like to hear it but it's just cold reality that horses are expensive, and that's probably why your parents are shunning the possibility. It would be really nice to have a horse though! I suggest leasing a horse.
Maybe you could make a deal with someone (that doesn't have as much time to ride/give attention to their horse) and help them out by taking care of their horse... Maybe ask your friend to share the horse with you if possible.
And maybe you could just hang around or work at a stable just to be with horses if all else fails. If you get a small job like that then you could start saving money and gaining even more horse knowledge so in the future you can get a horse!

I remember when I was like this before I got a horse. See what I did was I leased a horse (you know 'borrow' it, paying for the board fee in exchange for riding it). That way my parents could see that I was really ready for all the responsibility. If that doesn't work, agree on an age for when you can have one- such as sixteen. That way you can save up the money and take riding lessons before then.

well you can do some work with your friends horse to make sure you are positive b/c sometimes they can be dangerous and you can get hurt if they throw you off. anyway tell your parents about the work you did after 2 weeks of doing it and ask them to speak with your friend or his or hers parents so they can see what a good job they did . hope i helped

Is obvious that you really want a horse, and ive no doubt that you would take responsibily for it but you also said your family needs more money.
I know its hard but you have to stop asking your parents to buy you a horse because if they need more money then they cant afford it.
you know horses are expensive, too expensive for your family to pay for the horse and all the costs that come with a horse such as food, stables, land ect.
you also say they keep changing the subject when you mention it, so insted of asking them to buy a horse, just say "i know we cant afford a horse so could we come to a compromise" and ask them about horse riding instead. that way you can ride and look after the horse without all the expense.

One thing you could consider is to rent a horse. If you won't to get some cash for the horse you won't to bye if you are old inof. Then you could babysit of get a minor job like at ace hardware store somthing like that. This is my advice:)

Talk to her and tell her how you would get the money. If you be serious about it then you can convince her and then you and your friend can ride.

i understand because i love horses too. Why dont you lease a horse first and then your mom will see how you handle the job? Leasing is almost like having your own w/o really having it LOL and yes, they are expenise but tell your parents that you will pick up on your chores and start helping out alot more and will even think of getting and extra job someplace to earn some extra money to put into your horse care. good luck & keep me posted

When I was younger I wanted a horse soo badly. I used to cry so much because my parents wouldn't let me get one. When I keep asking my parents to get something, they always tend to change the subject because they get annoyed. Anywhom, you should just talk to your mom one on one. Tell her that you promise to take full responsibilty and that you will help out to raise money for it if you need to. Be good, clean around the house and basiclly suck up. When parents see that you aren't being bratty and that you aren't bothering them about it they will get it for you. Have you ever thought about if they might get it for you as a surprise? Hm, they might be.
