ok thsi is going to sound really stupid...but i can not for the life of me figure out what that blue chalk stuff does. i mean i know you put it at the end of the stick, but what does it DO? why do you put it there? if i dont use it will it affect my game? i will rate you high if you are able to tell me!
FunnyCide answered Friday November 4 2005, 4:12 pm: Okay, I know this! [Pool is really big in my family.]
The blue chalk that comes in a small cube, wrapped in paper is to put on the end of your pool stick. The reason you put it there is to help guide your stick and so when it makes contact with the pool ball, it does not slip. Basically, the blue chalk gives the tip of your stick grip - so it doesn't slip.
The white chalk that is large, usually cone or cylander shaped block, is for your hands. This is to "lubricate" your hands and make the stick glide more smoothly through your hands. This is especially helpful on hot July nights when your hands are extremely sweaty; it keeps the pool stick from sticking to your hands.
It won't really affect your game if you do or do not use either chalk. Some people are religious about using chalk, others could care less. It's mostly opinion.

PePPerMIntPUnk answered Friday November 4 2005, 4:03 pm: It helps keep friction with the ball. like it makes it so when you hit the ball, it will go in the direction you want to & it wont go in all different directions. yes it does affect your game.. USE IT! [ PePPerMIntPUnk's advice column | Ask PePPerMIntPUnk A Question ]
xKABOOM answered Friday November 4 2005, 3:46 pm: Honestly, I have always wondered that too. It has something to do with friction/kinetic energy. Science stuff. Try going to AskJeeves and type the question in, you'll be able to find something about the point of it or the history of it. [ xKABOOM's advice column | Ask xKABOOM A Question ]
*ashlee* answered Friday November 4 2005, 1:51 pm: its to help the ball from being slick when you hit it, and go off in some odd direction or something. it makes it easier to hit i suppose. so, sure it could effect your game. [ *ashlee*'s advice column | Ask *ashlee* A Question ]
FernGully answered Friday November 4 2005, 12:00 pm: The chalk helps with some friction between the cue stick tip and the cue ball. If you don't use chalk, you stand a greater chance of scratching (when the cue ball doesn't hit anything, or another player's balls) and your shot won't have as much spin as it could. Spin has all sorts of benefits. [ FernGully's advice column | Ask FernGully A Question ]
