Homework! Yuk! Yuk! Yuk!

Question Posted Thursday October 27 2005, 8:55 pm

I can't seem to get myself motivated to do my homework! I have a lot tonight, but I always just seem to think "I'll do it later. I'm having way more fun IMing my friend right now" Then "later" comes around, and I think the same thing. This cycle goes until like 8:00 when I have no choice to start my homework, but even then I get distracted. What can I do to perk up my assignments?

thx

Trinity

hey,
look... go to the doctor and tell him this problem... he may say that you have ADHD or ADD, its not bad or anything, its just where you cant pay attention or sit still for a short period of time. i hope you take this advice!

Maybe you're just not motivated at all. Removing distractions will not make you more motivated, it will just give the motivation that you already have a chance to shine.
You don't have to do well in school. It's not a law. If you genuinely want to do well in school, make the choice to do what it takes. If you don't really care, admit it to yourself now and save yourself a life of feeling guilty.

What i do is just go in my room && turn music on && just sit there && do my homework .. i don't think the music is distracting but idk ? i think it helps me concentrate more ? Plus if you do get your homework done early you won't have to worry about doing it later && you won't be so paniced all the time ! hope ii helped !

Oh, I'm exactly the same!! I have to do some homework away from the computer (maybe plan the homework out on paper) so I can't get distracted by MSN. Then I type it up or do research on the PC which doesn't take a lot of concentration so I can IM at the same time!
The thing is willpower. If you are having a pointless, going nowhere conversation then sign off and do homework instead.
To help you, you could say 'right I'll do a page of homework and then I can eat a chocolate bar' or 'I'll spend half an hour doing homework and then 10 mins IMing', something like that :)
Music is proven to aid concentration, so keep media player or your iPod or MP3 or CD player or whatever on while you work. However this only apparently works with music you know, so don't use a radio. Remember to drink lots of water as a 2% decrease in hydration equals a whole 10% lack in concentration!!

sounds like you have an attention deficit disorder. i too do the same thing and it can get really annoying.. i always push it away like your self. but i guess what you could try to do is do your homework with a friend that actually does their homework, because you wont be able to get destracted until your work is finished. this is what i do and it work pretty well. so try it and see how it goes.
good luck and hope i helped!

Rotten as it sounds you probably need to come home, chill out for an hour and then hit the books. Get it done and over with.

Don't turn on the computer or type a word until your homework is done. Horrible as it sounds you'll know you can get on as soon as the homework is finished. :)

GDROB2 answered Thursday October 27 2005, 9:43 pm:
Let's put it in perspective here ten years from now will that conversation on IM matter? Will you have the amazing career you always wanted? A lot of people just do not have much of an education or chance in life of making more than enough to support one person. Your grades are very important as are your SAT scores to get into a good college and have a shot at an excellent career.

Just remember frittering time away on IM all night and handing in half-assed work brings your marks down and puts you farther away from achieving your goals.

Here is how I would do this successfully when you arrive from school fix a snack, beverage and sit down and do an hour of homework before dinner. Break for dinner and then do as much as you can by 8 p.m. Then watch TV or Im for an hour. Wrap up your homework before 10 and you will have the right balance between home work and fun. After all, all work no play makes for a dull girl/guy.

Just do it. unless its really important , you shoudl be able to tell yourself that i can do it, and if that doesnt work you may have a lil case of liek adhd or something where to much is goin on for you to concentrate, but u jsut cant tell. its not bad its perfectly normal.

As hard as it sounds, you need to come straight home, have a snack, nothing else that has to do with your friends and just do your homework. When you get caught up in friends before you do homework, it makes it harder because you want to keep talking. And even if you feel just so lazy to get up and get your homework, just get up and tell yourself that you will do it now, and don't do some now and some later. You will feel better about having it all done right when you get home. Then, reward yourself with talking to friends and doing whatever you want. About the distractions, you need to do whatever will help you do your homework, if sitting in silence is what makes you better motivated, then work silently. If you need TV, make sure you're doing your homework too, especially on commercials. I know it doesn't feel too great doing homework at night, thats why you just have to get it done right when you come home. And as I said, have a snack. But no friends until it is all done. Try it tomorrow, and you'll see that it's way better, and do it everyday, make it a good habit forever.

Try and do your homework right after school, you probably won't feel like it when you have to do it anyway. After a couple of days of doing that you will just start doing it without even thinking about it, it will just sink into your mind. That's what i did anyway.
