My puppies are overtrained??

Question Posted Thursday October 20 2005, 10:06 pm

My puppies (two small breed, one male one female) are so newspaper-trained that they won't go outside! Every time we come in from a walk they go straight to the newspaper and do their business. What should I do?

This is a good thing! Everyday, move the newspaper about one inch towards the door. Eventually, move the newspaper outside where they can find it. After about a week of them using the newspaper outside, remove it completely. They should then start going outside.

Try putting them outside while you are gone. Don't leave the newspaper in the house anymore. Try putting it outside. When you have them going outside take the newspaper away.

this may seem very repititious, but, put the newspaper outside as everyone else has said, praise them greatly with words (good boy/girl) and treats everytime they go outside. Don't scold them when they go inside, but don't praise them either.

Now, for something new. I have heard of people training their dogs to go pee whenever they say "Go pee" or other such phrases. Basically just say "go pee" (or whatever you choose to say) whenever you bring the dog outside with the newspaper down. As soon as they go to the bathroom, praise them greatly. Soon, they will start to associate you saying "go pee" with them using the bathroom. If you can get your dogs to do this, then you should be able to get them to go outside where ever they are.

Move the newspapers outside, and frequently take them out there and set them on the newspaper. After they have done their business on the newspaper (if possible) put the waste on the grass while they watch. After a while, they will catch the scent of their own pee in the grass and they will just go where they last did. After they go in the yard, give them a treat.

try putting newspapers outside so they will get used to going outside.. maybe eventually they will stop needing the newspapers and eventually just start using the grass

First, take the paper away. Whenever you see them going towards it (where it used to be) call them and lead them outside, or just carry them out for awhile. Then they arent allowed to come back in until theyve done what they need to do. Commend them and then give them alittle treat!Lead them to go out enough where they will eventually catch on. Only put the paper down when your gone and at night. Repetition is the best reward.

i would think that you should move the newspaper outside. so when you come back from a walk, take them out and they will see the newspaper and go out there. eventually take the newspaper away. it make take them a little while to figure it out, but leave them outside until you see them go. then give them treats and play with them and tell them good dog and what-not.

You should put the newspapers outside. Give them a treat and praise them for going to the bathroom outside. You can say something like "Good boy, good girl, you went potty outside" Then gradually start to remove the newspaper and still praise them when the use the bathroom outside. Even after they are trained to use the bathroom outside, still give them treats. One of my dog's is 7 years old, the other 2, and we still praise them for using the bathroom outside. It just reminds them that they have to do their business OUTSIDE so we don't have any accidents inside.
