Atheists

Question Posted Tuesday September 13 2005, 8:52 pm

Why do atheists have a problem with Christian's trying to spread their religon? They seem to always get so defensive and mean. It really bugs me because they can't have an open mind to what someone else says without flipping out. Like Christian religon says "help those who don't believe in God" or something, and the atheists just FLIP out. I've been open minded to many atheists I know and listen to what they say about it calmly without saying their opinions are dumb, but then when I mention my relgion, they say it's so stupid and get mad at me for talking about it.

Anyway, to sum it all up, you basically just need to read the first sentence.

what athesists have you been talkin to? NOt very often do see athiests "fliping out" at people for their beliefs. Im an atheist and my very best friend is christian. Personally I am interested in religion, and all the differnet ones and i do enjoy learning abou it but when it gets to people tryin to convert me, I cant stand because they are tellin me things i find very hard to believe. every one is differnt tho and everyone is entitled to their own opinion and religious beliefs. And everyone should be open mined to all the diffrent belief systems.

I firmly believe that there are two types of people in the world. Some people have a religion (and atheism counts as a religion) and they tell everyone and let everyone know and try to convince other people to be like them. These people are stupid. Jesus didn't try to convert people to christianity (mostly because he wasn't christian he was a jew) he just led a good life (and according to scripture made miracles). Jesus taught people how to live well he didn't tell them to believe what he does. Lots of atheists lead good lives and help others and do not hate christians (or muslims or jews or any other member of a religion) because they don't need to. That is the second type of people, people who believe what they believe and do not feel the need to push it on others. I am not saying you shouldn't be willing to discuss your views just don't be a zealot for any religion.

Why do Christians have a problem with athiests? I guess its the same thing. How would you feel if someone told you you were so evil because you didnt believe in christ that you will spend the rest of your life burning in agony for your sins? especially when you just came how exhausted from volunteering at the hospital or homeless shelter? What makes someone truely deserve that?

Religion or any belief system is personal, and I know a lot of people not just atheists who become defensive when the topic of religion comes at hand. I don't think it's just an atheist thing, I know christians who get defensive when I talk about my beliefs (which are more eastern). I think people has a whole do not like being forced out of their comfortable way of thinking.
Luck to you

Well, I'm an atheists, and I don't flip out on people who try and talk to me about their religon, because I like to know why people believe in things and such.
But I think some people who say they are atheists aren't really atheists they just say that to get attention so they flip out to get more attention and plus they don't really have a reason to be atheists so they have to turn it around on you.
Another reason is like you said 'help those who don't believe in God', you have no clue about how many people try and convert me into being a Christain and after awhile it really starts to tick me off. So you could be a little more opened minded yourself and try to not 'help those who don't believe in God.'
So to kind of solve your problem, don't talk about religon to people. It's really not a good conversation topic because it is very easy to hurt someone or to cause drama.

AlienHumanologist answered Wednesday September 14 2005, 7:01 pm:
In all existing civilizations of the Galactic Sodality, aboriginal ancient mythologies slowly died out over a long period of autochthonous life-cycles. Although materialism will ultimately triumph over superstition in humankind, the timespan for this to occur is much longer than any individual human's life. This is psychologically demoralizing to the human atheist and may lead to despair, cynicism and spite.
If you should run across an atheist who treats you rudely, you should say, "Please treat my deeply held superstition with respect. Your philosophical outlook will ultimately triumph on Earth, but this era of human history will be looked on by future sociologists and historians with great interest principally because of the survival and interaction of successful religious memes such as those which I am attempting to spread to your mind."

You really are generalizing Atheists and Christians. All the Atheists I know (including my husband) are not like that at all. In fact they know more about religion, and the different kinds or religion then most Christians I know.

I think people in general have a problem with religious fanatics trying to shove their beliefs down our throats.

BrokenWings answered Wednesday September 14 2005, 2:47 pm:
I think the real problem here is your generalisation. I am an athiest and I have listened to many veiws about god, christian and otherwise, and personally i think its a load of bollocks. Im not saying other people shouldnt believe it and people are perfectly intitled to their oppinions. including athiests.

You have to realise that ok, maybe people might not believe in god bu just because you dont believe that, its wrong to tell them to change even if your religion tells you to help them. You can 'help them' in other ways other than trying to convert them. Many athiests know about religion though and have chosen not to follow it, thats why they might get annoyed at someone shoving it down their throats.

mylordwon answered Wednesday September 14 2005, 12:03 pm:
We were created to be God's friend, but when sin entered in, that friendship was severed. God sent His son Jesus to purchase us back. Some accept God's grace and others don't. But even in the ones who reject God, there is still a yearning to know God. They have a problem with Christians spreading the Truth because they are fighting the Truth within themselves whether they are conscience of it or not. Hearing it sparks life in their spirit; life that they would rather kill than embrace.

Really, a lot of athiests don't care. It is just the zealous athiests who think that no one should believe in anything that raise such a fuss.
