my best friend is depressed. and it makes me so sad! she says shes fat when shes NOT she says shes ugly when shes NOT and this one guy was like do you have a myspace so she gave him the link and said ew your ugly and signed off.. so she is really sad about that.. i keep telling her that if she thinks shes fat she should just go on a diet and i would go on it with her. she doesnt need to make herself prettier cause shes pretty enough! what can i do to make her feel better?
TheTeenGirl answered Friday August 5 2005, 10:05 pm: I think she needs to have more time with you. I mean, get her mind off of herself and go out for a while. Offering to go on a diet with her, may make her feel even more depressed. If shes really not fat, then don't suggest a diet, but if she is, then you need to let her parents know that shes struggling with herself. But, if you guys go to the movies, have a few sleepovers, go out shopping or just for a walk, then she'll have her mind off of things. Give each other make overs, do some girly things with her.
karenR answered Friday August 5 2005, 7:37 am: I don't know if she is so much depressed but she does seem to have a low self esteem. I'm sure that guys comment didn't help matters. You need to tell her that young boys can be immature and stupid and his comment should be ignored. If she isn't fat don't suggest a diet. That may make her feel you think shes fat. All you can do is reassure her that she looks great. Hopefully it is something she will get over. Just be a friend for her. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
JustAskAlli answered Thursday August 4 2005, 11:27 pm: Aww, I'm terribly sorry to hear that.
I go through this TONS of times.
You should talk to your friend, tell her your deep feelings & what you really think.
Make her understand that you love her and her other friends love her the way she is, she doesn't need to be "perfect" tell her her personality is the only thing that counts.
That kid has no right saying what he said, HELL HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HER! Thats terribly wrong.
Tell her that kid must have something wrong with himself if he has to bring a nice girl like your friend down..
Tell her whats true to your heart, thats what makes a great friend. =]
PrettyLady16 answered Thursday August 4 2005, 10:47 pm: Just make sure you take her out to do stuff and comfort her through out this stage that is all that you can really do at a time like this. Try to show her how pretty she really is, and encourage her to work out and eat right tell her it will pay off and she could be comforatable with herself. All you can really do is encourage her A LOT and try to have fun. Good luck with her. 'kiss' PrettyLady16 [ PrettyLady16's advice column | Ask PrettyLady16 A Question ]

x_pink_x109 answered Thursday August 4 2005, 9:34 pm: I am in the same situation with MY best friend. She thinks she's fat when she has a body that all the guys LOVE!
I "pepped" her up by giving her the old fashioned "Pep talk". Bring up all the times that guy has hit on her because of her looks. Bring up times when people have said she is pretty. Tell her that she is beautiful to you, no matter what. Beauty is within and looks don't really matter. Sometimes, they do but in her case, they don't. I'm sure she IS physically beautiful. Just because ONE guy says, "Ew. You're ugly," doesn't mean that she has to be depressed. That's his oppinion and you know what? He should go to Hell because he is both physically and mentally ugly!
If he is telling beautiful girls with good self esteems and high heads that their not pretty, he doesn't even deserve to live because he is RUINING the way people think of themselves. Now, whenever your friend looks in the mirror, she's not going to see anything but ugly. But she is pretty and you have to let her know that. I'm not all that pretty either... I have people tell me I'm ugly all the time. My own GRNDMOTHER tells me I'm ugly. I don't care because I have friends that love me and know me and respect me for ME. Not for my looks. As long as she has you, nothing can go wrong. She needs to know that. She has you and you will be with her 100% of the way. All my friends think their fat but I know they're not even CLOSE.
She has to know that physical beauty is important but not as much as the beauty inside of each and every individual.
As long as you let her know this, she will think better and cheer up. Try to make her laugh and take her somewhere fun like the movies, to get her mind off of wht she looks like!
You can email me if you want to tell me updates on this at x_pink_x109@yahoo.com O.K? You can also drop one in my inbox. I'm here for you and I'm here for your friend, too. If you need more help, you can email me in any of these two places... or BOTH! :-)
rockstarxlove answered Thursday August 4 2005, 9:15 pm: Sometimes Im like that too a little bit. So i can somewhat relate. She's self contious about herself, and that is pretty normal. It's not healthy to feel this way though. I dont think there is much you can do. The only thing i think you can do is keep telling her that those things arent true. And have other people you know tell her that too. It really helps to know a lot of people dont think your ugly/fat. This is pretty normal for teens to go through this though. If this gets too serious have her go to a doctor or something.
margarita_luvs_ya answered Thursday August 4 2005, 8:19 pm: A> I advise her to see a doctor.
B> She could be depressed and I don't mean just a mood swing but a really bad case of depression.
C> From what you've written I would say you and your friends are somewhere the ages of 13-18? These years are when teens look for their identity for who they are and can have crisis...I'm not crazy, I swear!
D> Try to get her to do a hobbie or sport and do it with her.
E> Treat her to a make over like a facial and a manicure/pedicure.
F> Compliment her.
G> Talk- communication is the best way to end a bad mood maybe something has happened in her life or family that she hasn't been telling you.
H> See a psycatrist(sp)they're not for crazy people, they're train to get through to people.
Your a good friend and she's lucky to have you, don't give up hope on her. [ margarita_luvs_ya's advice column | Ask margarita_luvs_ya A Question ]

GymCutiex27 answered Thursday August 4 2005, 7:42 pm: A lot of people think that they are ugly and think there fat, it is practically a way that girls think!
I can relate my friend thinks that shes fat and shes one of the skiniest people i know and she thinks shes ugly too. But a few things you could do are:
A) Make a list of her prettiest features whenever she tells you she is ugly.
B) Whenever she says she's fat tell her better points about her body and make it a point that she isn't fat!
C) Just be there for her whenever she needs you she obviously needs a friend. And maybe something else is wrong in her life and is making her feel bad. [ GymCutiex27's advice column | Ask GymCutiex27 A Question ]
