Question Posted Tuesday July 12 2005, 10:55 pm

Im looking for a dog, and i dont like small dogs. My mom however, if like pretty afraid of big dogs, a neat freak, and cant stand dominent dogs. I really wanted a Lab or a Pit bull, but my mom says that labs are way too active for her, and pitbulls of course were always out of the question. I also really like huskies. i was wondering, do you know if they are like hyperactive and likely to jump on you like labs? i have a large back yard, and a big house.
THANX SO MUCH. i rate high.

Huskies need CONSTANT human companionship. They get lonely. If you can't be with a husky all the time, you should have two huskies. Also, your yard should be fenced because they like to go off into other people's yards a lot. Also, you should not have a smaller dog or a cat because sometimes huskies kill those. However, they are very loyal and friendly to everyone and LOVE children. I don't think they make a mess of your house, either (though they love digging in the yard--make sure that fence is deep!) and there is no reason to be afraid of them. Your mom would probably adjust to one pretty easily. I've never read anything about them being hyperactive, but they are friendly so they might jump on you. I have only known one husky personally (she wasn't mine...she lived in this house and I would stop to pet her on the way home from school) and she never tried to jump on me, even though she was very happy to see me and would wait for me. Then again, she was older. I'm sure a puppy would be hyperactive.

I used to have one and he was not to hyper and he was a real sweet dog. He would never jump on ppl and act like an idiot, he was a calm dog, but did love to play fetch and run outside. These are really good dogs and they are so cute. But you cant really compare them b/c some dogs act different than others but..id put my money on it.
If you get him eary than most likly you can teach him right from wrong.

I have a lab. Labs are not hyperactive that much. If you get them when they are puppies and train them early they will be good. If you have a fenced in yard, or even a big yard you don't need to worry about them being active at all. And they rarely shed. Huskies do. I also have a Anstaph Terrier - or however you spell it. They are like pitbulls but great family dogs. So are labs. They aren't that much of maintainence. Convince your mom to get the one you like, who knows, you can wind up gettin something completely different from her expectations.

Hope you get the breed you want!
Sincerely,
Abby <3

I actually have a Husky German Shepard mix and my dog is wild as hell..he gets very excited very fast BUT he is themost well behaved dog that I have ever met so no they don't jump unless they get too excited..(tip: if you are going to get one i would train it bc when you first get them they are out of control. but that might just be bc mine is part german shepard)

good luck!!<3

maybe you should adopt an older dog instead of getting a puppy. then you can get whatever kind of dog you want pretty much because most dogs calm down as they get older.

Huskies are very active.

I'd recommend perhaps a collie or a golden retriever. Or perhaps a mid-sized dog.

Do some research on breeds. Animal Planet has a great thing on their website to help find the perfect dog breed for you.

Nyx answered Wednesday July 13 2005, 3:02 am:
Huskies are really beautiful dogs. I have always wanted one... however it might not be the kind of dog you want. Huskies are escape artists... and even the best cared for, best kenneled Husky may get loose, never to be seen again. They can crawl through microscopic holes, scale 8 foot fences with a ballerina's grace, break tie-out chains and slip collars so skillfully even Houdini would be amazed. Owners must build strong compounds and continually check for that tiny hole, loose fencing, or gleam in their dog's eye that says, "I know something you don't!" Remember: the term "escape proof" is not in the Huskies lexicon.

One glimpse into a Husky "crater" is enough to realize how efficient a hole digger the Husky is. Of course true to the Huskies nature, he will choose when and where to dig. This can present a problem for many homeowners. However, Huskies who do have a place to dig seem more content and less destructive. Huskies will dig and chew, outside or inside! If left to roam freely in the house, the dog can turn a neat orderly home into a housekeeper's nightmare.

However, on the plus side, they rarely bark... preffering to whine or moan. And given the proper training, they will obey simple commands and act quite respectable--most of the time. Also, they will alert their owner if there is danger present. Huskies are nomadic, and can easily adjust to new situations. However, a nomad at heart, the Husky has no fear of cars nor homing instincts compatible with our modern society, and once loose, he can easily fall prey to injury, disease, and hunger, or become a pest chasing and hunting small animals or digging in neighbors' yards. Husky owners quickly learn that, for the dog's sake, it must be confined or kept on lead at all times.

They are athletic, and need to be taken out on daily walks. They are affectionate, however they love to jump up and 'hug', so if there are small children present they could easily frighten them or knock them over.

While they are beautiful canines, I wouldn't recommend them as a house dog. And I don't think your mother would much appreciate it jumping up at her for affection(as they can get quite big). Pure breeds are also quite expensive(depending on the breed). Perhaps you should try your local animal shelter and help a dog in need out?

My border collie/Australian shepard mix is really jumpy and active, and those breeds are big, about the size or a little smaller than a pitbull, if you get a mix of those two that's best, b.c.'s have a lot of inbreeding because of those BABE movies. But still they're really good dogs, smart to. Mine opens doors.

my friend's stepmom has a husky and he's the sweetest thing. he is not jumpy at all, but that's the only husky i know so others could be different. I think huskies are so pretty. you could also train him to not jump. sure, all puppies jump and sometimes bite or nibble, that's why you train them. dogs aren't just born good, you've gotta teach them.

Huskies are beautiful dogs! My cousin has one and he's part wolf. He's a really nice dog, calm and great with people and kids. They're not really that hyperactive, but can be when they're in the mood and they wont jump all over you. I'd suggest a Huskie.

K3587 answered Wednesday July 13 2005, 1:26 am:
I believe that huskies are pretty active. The best dog I ever had was a half-wolf. Her name was Teela; she was calm, friendly to other animals (especially cats) and children, but could be quite intimidating when needed. (She was my bodyguard when I was outside playing as a child.) However, these kinds of dogs have to bred, and purchased; and the price tag is quite high. You know what, forget everything I just said.

Try a Golden Retriever. They're pretty good dogs when it coems to the larger ones. And decently calm.
