♣cheap candy♣

Question Posted Sunday July 10 2005, 11:26 pm

I'm 14/f and I know I should be reading advanced books because I'm in 11th grade Honors english even though I'm a freshman. And, generally, I do. But a lot of the time I like to read books that are, well, sappy romance novels. Like the book version of soap operas. Big time guilty pleasure!!! I feel so guuuuuuuilty about it. It's like cheap candy, tasty to eat only not very nourishing, but it's a book. And since my family is big on reading "advanced literature" and my mom would freak out if she knew I was reading them, and I don't know whether it's ok for a person of my level of reading to be reading these!? I know it sounds like I'm being a snobby bitch that needs to be reassured of her own level but I'm not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot!!!!!

hey lulu

You read those books because it's fun. Nobody should care about that, actually it's really good that you read books. It doesn't matter what kinda books you read for fun. Sure, you need to read those other books on school, but it's your choice what to read in your spare time, so go buy an other one I would say. Enjoy!

I'm the same way. You should always have one book for pleasure, and one more advanced book for school or on a suggested reading list. Best of both worlds and usually works. Good luck in high school :)

No, you don't sound like a snobby bitch! It's okay to read romance novels. I mean, reading would be NO fun if you couldn't read the books you were interested in! I like romance novels too, it's okay. Really. I mean, what's wrong with reading books you find interesting? And if your mom happens to find them, explain that you like to read these books, no big deal. =)

It's true; at least you are reading. Many people our age don't read. I say you can still read them, but don't let it be all you read. Make sure you have a big mixture of reading material.

I get what your saying with the whole its a big gulity pleasure because its one of mine too. You don't have to tell your mom and anyone that your reading them as long as you still read the advanced lit. once in a while. If they do question you just tell them that you needed a break from the advanced literature but your still reading it.

I sort of understand how you feel, Lulu. I was reading at a 9th grade reading level in third grade; by my eighth grade year I had reached college level. English classes have always been jokes for me, and my teachers frequently assigned me books that were too complex or boring for other students.

It's good that you read. VERY good. It's good for your mind, and good for your studies. And there's nothing wrong with reading some Trashy Love Stories. One of my best friends is the same way.

However, you should try to balance your literary tastes a bit, and make sure you don't read too many trashy romances. Remember, books have two levels--reading level, and interest level. Reading levels are an approximation of what grade you'd have to be into understand the words in a novel. Interest levels are the level the novel was written for. Romances tend to have low to middle reading levels--which is cool for those of us with high reading levels--and high interest levels. You are kinda young, and probably fairly inexperienced with sex and love. You need to make sure that these books don't give you an unrealistic view of romance and sexuality... which means that, like any guilty pleasure, they must be taken in moderation.

I guess, my advice to you is, try to keep toward the more cerebral end of the trashy romance fiction... and make sure to mix in some stuff from other genres are too. Classics are good, as is the odd sci-fi novel. If you want some suggestions, feel free to ask me in my own private journal.

Also, talk to your mom about sex, if she won't tweak out. That way you get mulitple perspectives on the act, so you won't get wrapped up in the romance novel concept thereof.

Here's a confession: I love romance novels too, and I have *never* be in anything less than advanced English. Seriously, aside from your concern with your parental units, there is nothing wrong with readin "trashy" novels. Why do they think they even exist? There are tons of people like you out there. The key word here is: balance. Remember that classics and "advanced literature" are labeled that way for a reason - they're actually good! Give them a try. And maybe try talking to your parents about your habit. But most importantly, stop feeling guilty! It takes all kinds!

Draak answered Monday July 11 2005, 2:53 am:
If I was your mom I'd just be glad you are reading. Not many young adults these days enjoy reading any kind of literature. Besides, not all romance novels are worthless. Take for instance, myself. I have learned a great deal of history no one else would typically know about just from reading historical romance novels. Just because it's reading for fun doesn't mean you aren't taking or learning anything from reading it.

Also, if your mom does freak, explain to her that some Shakespeare is sappy romance... Who knows, a hundred years from now the people in the future might think that Nora Roberts or Jude Devereaux are great writers of our time.

Just keep on reading! It does the brain good.

Your mom sounds like the snobby bitch.

"Advanced Reading Levels" nowadays are practically non-existant, with all the mediums that can deliver the same story, people no longer see the point in reading because they are lazy.

It should be enough for most people that you are reading at all.

Do your parents only watch significant new stories? Do they only read the significant articles in the newspaper? Do they only talk to seemingly intelligent people? Do they only watch significant movies?

If the answer to any of these questions is "no" then for them to mock or ridicule your choice of literature is pure hypocrisy.

Read whatever it is you want - just because you are capable of reading "11th grade level literature" (which nowadays is generally on par with a short article in Cosmopolitan) doesn't mean you can't read anything under that.
