interior decorating?

Question Posted Monday May 30 2005, 8:26 am

in college I want to major in interior decorationg because I think I have a flair in that type of art. for those who don't know that much about it, it's when you help design color schemes, furniture, decorations, paint, etc. for peoples' rooms and stuff. Well I want to know if that's a good paying job and if I'll make enough money to support myself and kids, a house, etc. I'm not trying to be selfish, but I really want to know if it's a good enough job. Thanks.

I don't read the previous comments, but I must say, take my advice. lol.

What a great major.
But the negative part is that it's really hard to break into the industry, and become one of the "elites" and famous names.
So this means you will first get a lot of shitty paying jobs and you have to slowly work yourself up the ladder.
It may be sucky in the beginning, but I'm sure with the enough passion, you will make it.

And maybe, someday, you can come decorate my house? HMMM? lol.

If you have any more questions, please ask me. :)
GOODLUCK!
<3AMY.

go to a search engine, type in "interior decorating", and do your research from there. in my opinion, i would think interior decoratting would supply you with definetely enough money for the things needed, but that also depends on the type of lifetyle you live as well. hope i helped.

You probably will because people are constantly checking their houses to see what is in style so you will probably get a lot of business. (If you're good at it.)

My aunt is an interior decorator and she is GREAT at it. She also cleans their house while she's there. You could do that if your still worried, but I think that you would make enough just designing.

Yeah definitely it can pay really really well. Obviously you'll start on a fairly low salary but as your expertise increases you can do pretty well out of interior design. It would also depend on what sort of market you were aiming for. For example if you wanted to do posh mansions you'll be able to charge more! All in all go for it, especially as it sounds like something you enjoy anyway. If your clients see that you enjoy your work they'll be more inclined to employ you and more employment means more money! Good luck

Michele answered Monday May 30 2005, 9:22 am:
WEll yes, there are some interior decorators who make a lot of money. Martha Stewart started out that way and Chris Casson Madden, you can look her up on the web. She has a web page. As you know they have been on TV, have published books, and magazines. It is important that you promote yourself once you have your degree. Take some courses in marketing also, that will show you how to promote yourself. Get your name out there, to bring in customers. It would also be important to live in an area where people have "disposable" cash. Everyone wants to have a beatiful home, but not everyone can afford an interior decorator. So, bottom line there are decorators who have made a lot of money, and there are some whe have not been successful. It all depends on the person.

HOpe this helps and good luck to you.

Michele

I went to salary.com, and found that in my area, the median income was $37,000. Check out [Link](Mouse over link to see full location), and use your area, and your own job specifications, and you get the 25th, median, and 75th percentiles for income for your field.

Hope that helped!

It is totally a good job. You just have to find the right place to work at, like a professional interior decorating company. They get a lot of money. Your not being selfish by making sure you'll have money to support yourself, kids and a house. Good Luck.
