selectopaque answered Thursday April 28 2005, 10:36 am: To me, someone who doesn't have a whole lot of professional work experience, especially in the field that I'm going to school for, and trying to get a job... volunteer and community service is what stood out of my resume the most.
It's not just that they will know you care about the community, it's that they need to know what sort of experiences you have had in a job type environment. Especially if the community service you've done is somewhat related to the job that your applying for.
If you worked with people, that's ALWAYS a plus with pretty much any job you're ever going to apply for.
It will also show them that you care enough about something to work there without pay. If you care that much, then it won't be very hard to get you to work when you actually are getting paid. [ selectopaque's advice column | Ask selectopaque A Question ]

Karen answered Wednesday April 27 2005, 6:06 pm: You should put on your resume that you do a lot of community service hours because it does matter in a way. It shows that you like to help and even though that isn't based on if you will get the job or not, bosses and/or managers like to know about that stuff. I would put it on your resume if I were you. Laura_Ashanti answered Wednesday April 27 2005, 6:00 pm: Yes! Do not forget the hours of community service you have done - even if you dont think its important. It will look very professional to the people reading your resume and will show them just how much time you did the community hours, which is more important than what you did. You will also look very well-rounded and friendly - which is usually what they look for. ♥ Laura [ Laura_Ashanti's advice column | Ask Laura_Ashanti A Question ]
lorelei answered Wednesday April 27 2005, 5:53 pm: That absolutely counts! Especially if you have no paid work experience. List ALL of your volunteer experience and make sure to list the supervisor's name and number.
It shows that you were able to dedicate yourself to a position that didn't involve pay...and how can that not look good? :)
