karenR answered Saturday April 16 2005, 6:29 pm: Don't know if this site will do you any good but it was informative about scoliosis and yoga. The girl who wrote it recommends some books and you can also email her if you need more info.
flutterbyme_8i8 answered Saturday April 16 2005, 6:14 pm: I also have scoliosis, but had to have a spinal fusion at 15. My doctor always told me that any kind of exercise was good as long as you don't overdue it. I work out regularly and I do have pain, but I feel better now than I did before when I didn't exercise. There is a web-site dedicated to people with scoliosis and they have wonderful forums. You could also go there for more information. The support you get is fantastic and they have a wealth of information about everything!
dwarp answered Saturday April 16 2005, 4:37 pm: It could help. Pliates and yoga both work with relaxing your muscles in the right way and strengthening them properly. It probably won't make your condition a lot better, but it will stop it from getting worse because you will be more concious about your posture and won't curve your spine as much. The only thing is that pliates is a pretty strenuous workout and it might actually make your scoliosis worse, because you are lying on your back a lot. Shellybeth101 answered Saturday April 16 2005, 4:31 pm: I have scoliosis also! I have to wear a back brace because mine is so bad. I havent heard anywhere that pilates or yoga works. My doctor says that they dont really know what causes it or prevents it and that the best thing they can do is surgery or make you wear a backbrace. But dont worry if your curve is bad enough to where you have to wear a brace you will find out by a doctor. But for right now I would just listen to my mom and besides doing yoga is great excercise you will feel really really relaxed and comfortable with your body!

Karen answered Saturday April 16 2005, 4:20 pm: Well, I know that yoga would work and help if you have Scoliosis but for some people, pilates just makes their back worse (pain-wise). Try doing one of these things or both and if it doesn't help, then stop. [ Karen's advice column | Ask Karen A Question ]

cailoisa answered Saturday April 16 2005, 4:18 pm: I have it too. Yoga will make you feel quite a bit better. Pilates kills my back. Focus on exercises that strengthen you upper and lower back, and your abdominals. Remember to take it slow to start with to avoid strain. [ cailoisa's advice column | Ask cailoisa A Question ]
