We're doing a lab in school next week which involves the murdering of goldfish so that we can look at its circulatory system. Who cares? It's just a goldfish, right? Wrong. Goldfish are animals too. People, like myself, have had golfish as pets. Mine lived up to be 7 years old, which is a very long time for a goldfish, but it created a bond between us. My teacher even made a joke about it, that her turtle likes this lab the best because he gets to eat all the dead goldfish. Which I guess is good in retrospect because they aren't just throwing them away once they've dug out all of their organs. It's the principle of the thing though, I know the boys in my class with be nothing but immature about this and torture the goldfish before killing them. I can't watch any kind of death, the only time I killed a fly I cried for an hour. And she has them swimming in glass bowls in our room now, so we get to watch them every day, only to murder them later on. When we did frog dissection, an alternate computer program was offered to observe their organ systems, so why are we buying so many fish each year that could have ended up as pets for other people and lived 7 years? If we killed just one fish and made a video on it,though it's still cruel to that one fish, the hundereds of fish we kill each year would be limited to one fish, once. Or even if our teacher was going for a hands-on experience, she could just kill one at the front of the class and have all of the students take a look. It's just wrong to me that we are going to be graded on the procedure of taking a beating heart and making it stop.
So, what can I do to stop this? How do I try and get my teachers and classmates to understand? Or am I overreacting?
Jess5764 answered Monday May 16 2005, 7:01 pm: i agree with you, but theres nothing you can do to stop it. thats weird shes got them in bowls though usually they deliver them dead when you're gonna disect something. uhh you cried when you killed a fly?? thats a little extreme. xoJoElenox answered Monday April 18 2005, 4:50 pm: first thing i have to say, i seriously think your my twin! im a sorta a vegatarian too, except i dont eat meat at all, i couldnt eat an animal, its just wrong to me, this same experience happened to me, we were going to kill a fish too, goldfish in particular and i have three goldfish's and i love them! and i definetly couldnt kill one and then look at my three fishes you know? so i told my teacher that i think it's wrong about killing the animals, and she laughed, and i told her i refuse to do it, and i didnt do it, but i thought i didnt want anyone else not have to do it, so i got everyone who didnt want to do it to tell my teacher, and we got yelled at, but dont give up we and you should too go to your principal and tell him or her your opinion, i did that and she totally understood! but if your principal doesnt go over with it to well, then tell your parent, have them have your back, believe me, if you truly believe in your right, then you'll find a way to stop it. in my school, we dont have to kill them anymore thanks to everyone who fought for it, but that doesnt mean we dont have to disect them, but its better than not killing them! and by the way, your totally not overreacting so dont think you are cause your definetly not! hope i helped! ask me anytime!

agonyaunt2cute4u answered Sunday April 17 2005, 3:40 pm: okay - well, technically, it's not murdering goldfish. the goldfish is already dead. and even if you threw away the organs and stuff, the decomposition of the fish just adds to the natural cycle of the world. if the fish died, in the wild i mean, it would just rot. gross, but true. so we are doing a good thing - this way,yes the fish will still rot. but we are learning at the same time. it's like somebody leaving their body to medical science. i know cutting things up is disgusting, and if you wanted i'm sure you could make a formal objection to be excused - tell the teacher o a parent or whatever how you feel. texas_girl answered Sunday April 17 2005, 12:15 pm: I applaude you! WAY TO GO! When we did the frog disections last year i felt the same way to. The sad part about this is there isnt alot that you yourself can do. I dont know the exact rules where you live, but here if you get a peetition going and take it to the principal you can atleast change the way your school approaches things like this. Like putting the fish somewhere as to not let the guilt come over students. i hpoe i helped!

You can see if there is people in your class that feel the same way as you do and start an save the fish corperation. Or you could talk to your teacher after class and speak your mind, or even better, YOUR PRINCIPAL. K2204 answered Saturday April 16 2005, 8:04 pm: I agree, i hate it! killing animals is so horrible, they have no way to defend themself against humans! even if your teacher and classmates do, you can just not do it!!
and just dont do it, it is a good cause!!!! dont just do it for the grade, dont!!
talk to the principal or councler, but i fully agree!!
cailoisa answered Saturday April 16 2005, 4:15 pm: There's not much that you can do to stop the whole class. But, you might be able to get yourself out of it. Be prepared to compromise. Insist to your teacher that you really can't do it. She if she has any alternate suggestions first. If not, suggest writing a paper, watching over a classmates shoulder and taking detailed notes, and so on.
therocketsummer answered Saturday April 16 2005, 10:57 am: There's two ways you can look at this. Your way, or the teacher's view. Take her personality and take that into perspective. It sounds as if she doesn't care much about the goldfish. To some people, goldfish are goldfish, not a cat or dog. They don't think much of them. When we have them as pets, they are usually off in a corner and fed very little because we tend to forget about them. With cats and dogs, it's hard to forget about them. That's why people don't see it your way. I see where you're comming from, but I don't think there is any way for you to stop the lab because the teacher looks like she's already prepared for it. Try asking her what you said in your question, why can't we just do one demonstration. If you are really sickened by the thought and sight of a dying goldfish, ask her if you could pass on this lab because of your outlook on this lab and how you find it cruel. If you want people to understand, tell them what you told us. I didn't think much of goldfish when I first read the question, but after I really do see why you're upset. Just because we can't interact with fish as we do dogs, doesn't mean they still can't be friends.
tweetysweetyangelLeLe answered Saturday April 16 2005, 10:54 am: Not to say your overreacting, but it is a little drastic. Just because although animals have a right to live along with the rest of us, they aren't the ones that matter in this situation. If you refuse to do this then most likely you will get a zero, and then your GPA will go down a little, on the other had you could just do the dissection and let one more fish die, because everyone else is going to do it anyway, and get the points. Or there is the option of being absent and your teacher giving you someone else's obeservations to use or something like that. Good Luck! Becki_xo answered Saturday April 16 2005, 10:51 am: well people would say your overreacting, but thats only your beliefs and nobody can say your wrong for that. I doubt you can stop the whole class from doing it but you could tell the teacher after class how much it bothers you... you can be absent that day also. i do understand you and it is sad if you think about it, but most people think that small things dont have feelings? if its small and doesnt wag a tail when you come in the room then they must have no feeling. hah well i understand and they do have feelings if they like it or nottt...
