i brush my retainer every day. it still ends up smelling like crap somehow.. my mom called my ortho, and they said to use the stuff that you put dentures in.. i did that, and it still smells bad! does anyone know something good that will get the nasty smell away from my retainer?

Take a tiny container that your retainers can easily fit into, and pour the ACT into the container so that it is about halfway full. When you take your retainers out (i take mine out in the morning, i wear them at night) put them in the container. It will taste good AND smell good!
If the taste is too strong, wash them off under hot water for about 5 seconds before putting them in your mouth-it will get rid of the strong taste. change the ACT in the container every 1-2 days.
Ladyfish answered Friday May 13 2005, 10:30 pm: well I have a retainer and i know exactly what you mean. if the denture tablets dont work after a fea days then try soaking it in a vinigar solution. if that doesnt work try listerine. and if that doesnt work then dont wear it for a day or 2, just let it soak in the denture stuff all day, dont lake it our after 10 minutes. HyperactiveMiss answered Sunday April 17 2005, 12:47 am: You should try soaking your retainer in the solutions the people before me have mentioned. On top of that be sure to floss, use mouthwash, brush your teeth, gums, and tongue at least twice a day. Every time you take your retainer out to eat and etc, be sure to brush it with soap/toothpaste before you put it back in or at least rinse it with water. I brush my retainers with a mild soap and it works for me. Good luck with your retainers! [ HyperactiveMiss's advice column | Ask HyperactiveMiss A Question ]
zapreth answered Thursday April 7 2005, 9:35 am: Make a paste out of baking soda and water, put it on your retainer. Instead of using water to brush the paste off use vinegar. You will probably need to brush it with your regular toothpaste afterward to get rid of the vinegar taste, but the smell will be gone. [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]
Napalm350z answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 10:34 pm: Take your toothbrush, put toothpaste on the toothbrush, wet the toothbrush, scrub the retainer down and then rinse it with warm water. [ Napalm350z's advice column | Ask Napalm350z A Question ]
gakkuhideto answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 9:24 pm: Soak it for a few hours in mouthwash. It smells because of the bacteria in your mouth, so you should also brush your ENTIRE mouth for about three minutes straight atleast twice a day. [ gakkuhideto's advice column | Ask gakkuhideto A Question ]
Kels answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 9:22 pm: when you put it in your case, and its wet, that causes it to smell, if you close the case, try either 1-only putting it in the case when it is dry or 2- dont close the case!!
I had the same problem!
Im ALWAYS here for you if you hvae ANY questions anytime, about anything!
Michele answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 8:57 pm: Try soaking it in water and baking soda. I once used that then my dog got sprayed by a skunk. He brought the stuff in the house. It worked very well. I also used it on some furniture that my cat urinated on. The stuff I bought at the pet store didn't work. He baking soda did.
Karen answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 8:51 pm: When I had my retainer about a year ago, it didn't smell but every day, I used this denture cleaner that my orthdontist gave to everyone that was called "Polident" or something like that; the actually cleaner was a tiny circle and one side was green and the other side was white with green spots are something like that. It made my retainer smell like mint. You probably used that, right? Do your brush over your tounge when you brush your teeth in the morning and night? If you don't, then that may be the reason of why your retainer smells really bad. When you eat, take out your retainer if you keep it in. The product that I mentioned should work but if that was the one you used, then I don't know what else you could use, sorry. [ Karen's advice column | Ask Karen A Question ]
