Cutting

Question Posted Thursday March 31 2005, 12:59 pm

I'm not going through this but it's out of curiousity.
Some girl told me that she was cutting but that she was only leaving marks in her skin and wasn't getting right down to where it would start bleeding BUT where she marked her self after became swollen for a couple of days and was a red bump.
I asked someone about it and they said it was perfectly safe and should be happy she's doing that rather than actually cutting and someone else told me it's not AS dangerous but she could still do some harm to her self.
I didn't really understand how she could really hurt her self by making marks in her skin that later turned in to bumps so can anyone explain it a bit and/or tell me which person is correct.
thanks :)

While there's really no physical damage thus far, it can escalate into a serious danger to the girl. The worst damage, however, will be within her psyche. Cutting yourself is not normal; she sounds like she may need psychological and emotional help.

woah whoever told you its fine is wrong! its still self inflicting your body and she does it because shes insecure ..something is goin on with her mentally. its NOT ok..ways that are ok to take the place of cutting is to write poems, hit a punching bag..talk to someone , etc. Itss bad to do that because if we were meant to have red bumps all over..we would have them . Red bumps is a type of injury..no its not a deep cut..but still..its self infliction. its NOT ok to do that.
hope i helped

I've heard that the little bumps can result in internal bleeding. But, cutting, is dangerous, no matter what form. I'm sure your friend, with your support, can stop it.. you don't want to have her hurting herself!

I'm just going to tell you what you've probably been told before. It's not right. If she is cutting, then she will continue to cut. It doesn't matter how much skin she is slicing through. If she is in enough pain to want to hurt herself, she needs someone to help her. I need to tell someone what she is doing before she seriously gets hurt. All it takes is a little extra pressure and she might cut something vital.

If she is your friend then it is your responsibility to get her medical and mental help.

zapreth answered Thursday March 31 2005, 2:39 pm:
She's risking herself on several levels. First, every cut can become infected. Some of these infections can kill, staff, tetanus. If she's getting swollen places and red bumps, she's cutting deep enough to reach blood, just not deep enough for it to flow freely. Second, her habit can get worse. She will eventually cut freely and start leaving scars. Third, she is abusing her body. This builds a feeling of worthlessness even if she never leaves a permanent mark. Things will get worse for her. These are some of the risks.

The fact that a person is cutting means they are having a problem somewhere that needs to be dealt with.By a professional.

I don't really think the manner in which they do it matters much. The act itself is not right. It's kinda like playing russian roulette with the saftey on. She think's she's doing it safley right now....but shit happens, next time who knows?

She can't hurt hurself too bad.
It'll leave scars, and that'll suck, but it's not dangerous.
It could end up hurting her if she becomes ammune to the pain of just leaving marks on her skin, and she starts to cut deeper.
