Question Posted Wednesday March 30 2005, 9:54 am

Hi,
My school doesn't do work experience but I need to do a two week work experience placement to get onto the childcare course I would like to study. So, I'm trying to organise it myself and writing letters to all the nurseries in my area asking if they can help me.

My questions are:
*Do you think they would prefer handwritten or typed letters? (My handwriting is neat)
*What goes after 'yours' when you don't know the name of the person you are writing to?
*I am studying for 21 GCSEs. Do you think I should mention this or would it make me sound like I'm showing off?
*Should I mention any of my GCSEs? For example, I know that I have to gain good qualifications in English to be a Nursery Nurse, so should I mention that I'm studying English?

Oh, and I've been to Connexions, if anyone was going to suggest them to me, and they were absolutely useless, so I'm doing this myself.

Thanks!
xxx

Oooh, when I say 'yours', I mean at the end. Is it yours sincerely, faithfully, truly, what?

1. If your handwriting is neat and legible, it gives the impression that you have put more effort into the letter, and are therefore hardworking
2. If you want to say 'Yours' at the end, then the correct one is 'yours faithfully', but its also good to add in 'thankyou for your time' or 'i hope to hear from you soon'.
3. If you are studying for 21 GCSEs, it would be good to give an example of some of the grades you have been predicted in relevant subjects. If you need to gain good qualifications in English, then it would be useful to give them your predicted grade. If you haven't been predicted grades then try and mention how you think studying for a certain GCSE could benefit you if you were to do work experience for them.
I hope all that made sense, and good luck finding your work experience!
Vic

*Tped. Its more formal.
*Just put "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir or Madam" and put Sincerely, (your name printed) and then when you print the letter out..do your signature in pen right under your printed name.
*Mention everything you can that might get you into the job!

I recommend you get a book about writting cover letters and resumes. I found mine extreamly helpful when applying for jobs. And that is basically what you are doing, applying for a job.

*First of all, ALWAYS type out a bussiness letter.
*For "Yours" - "Thank you for your time." Nothing to personal.
*Yes! Mention your skills and goals. The goal of a cover letter is to "show off" and tell them why they need you.
*Your qualifications should be listed in a resume you send with the letter.

You should type it, it look's better and if you don't know who you are writing to it is, To Whom This May Concern and yes you should include all of your skills and achievements.

RBfootballTD answered Wednesday March 30 2005, 10:49 am:
1) i have written many letters in my life, and you know what? handwritten is actually the best, that way they know how you are, hardworking, i mean if you are willing enough to write a handwritten letter, probably multiple times, i would definatly look at you atleast twice...
2) i would also say "thank you for your time" or even just "Thank you" instead of ending it yours, when you end it yours, its like your talking to a friend, in my opinion, ending it with somthing more official will also get you brownie points.
3) bragging? whats bragging? brag-n-Arrogant or boastful speech or manner
boast-n-A source of pride ( i looked these up) my point is, just because you put it in there, its not bragging, and even if it was, look at both the defanitions again.....is pride really a bad thing? not last time i checked, so even if you are "bragging" it is also called "informing" and telling them what hard work you have put into for being what will probably be, and outstanding nurse! Good luck, i hope ive helped!

1) typed is probably best
2) o0o0o0 maybe just sincerely or something. im not really sure.
3)i think you should mention everything you are studying for. like in a resume, its not considered bragging, its going into detail.
4) yes! mention that you are studying english. mention anything you think could help you get a good, enriching experience.
hope this helps! <3
