doodz, i cant stand it wen u talk dis way!

Question Posted Wednesday March 9 2005, 11:39 pm

Am I the only one that believes people should type correctly when asking a question? Is there some way to create something that would change words that were "Chatspeak" to English?
For example:

there is dis boi, i relli relli like him! wat do i do?

Would become:

There is this boy, I really, really, like him! What do I do?

I know that is a dumb question to start with, but it's an example. I don't know how to create a program that would change the "fake" words into "real" words.. if you know, and would share, you rock!

lol sorry if im answering this a little late and you got like 23449042490249 people that answered this. i dont think that there will be a program like that because a lot of people type differently. ill take the example you used:

there is dis boi, i relli relli like him! wat do i do?

some people might type it like:

thiir iz disz boii, eye relliiy relliiy lyke hiim! wut doo eye doO?

lol see the difference? i dont think a program can turn all of those chatspeak words into real words.. but hey! you never know. i also talk like that on AIM but i just say "u" and "idk" and "omg" instead of 'you', 'i don't know', and 'oh my god'. hehe hope i helped and sorry again if i answered it late.

xox melissa
please rate!

i totally and completely agree, and in the instructions for asking a question it specifically says:
"You'll get better advice if you make some attempt to use proper spelling and grammer."
(although they spelled grammar wrong) they are the rules, and you should follow them. and besides, we all know you know how to spell those words, so dont act stupid.

I agree with you. On AIM I sometimes talk like a little differently but just abverations. I can not stand it when people make a work the same lenght (sp?) if not longer just to make it look "cool". I love the idea of making a software; however, it would be extremely hard. Maybe you can try making a website. Then you can send the link to people and it teaches them to type in English or something. I know it's not much but I hope I helped a little. ♥ good luck

Asc answered Thursday March 10 2005, 1:19 pm:
It would be possible but really, really hard to do. You'd need to somehow arrange a proxy program for your browser, and get it to change out 'chatspeak' with real words.

From a translating perspective this is very simple, but implementing an arrangement like that is beyond most people without professional experience. Now, the people who run tools like the Google page translator could add another language type in minutes, and after that it's just a matter of making a list of 'chatspeak' words. I know that somewhere out there there's already a 'Mr. T' page translator and a 1337 page translator.

But for practical purposes, you'll probably be better off just not reading it. I don't; if someone doesn't care enough to type legibly, I sure's hell don't care enough to give myself a headache reading it.

I agree with you to a certain extent. You are complely right about chatspeak, but you got to remember is that humans are LAZY! We tend to paraphrase things just to make our point quicker. Rather than saying "You are awesome!" We say "UR Awesome" Yes its weird and stupid, but we are lazy! I am only human and i do use "ChatSpeak", but i compltely understand you and, no you are not the only one who feels this way.

AskMegan answered Thursday March 10 2005, 10:33 am:
Okay, first of all, this question is all out rude. People have the right to express themselves in anyway, shape or form. You have no right to critisize someone for being themselves, that's not cool. You're here to give advice, not to judge people on how grammatically correct they are. It doesn't matter, they want the advice not the english corrections.

Thank u n hav a nicce dayzzzz!!!!!

Megan

Edit- How so very rude. I recived a one for that? Hm. Well, let me tell you a little something sweetheart. You obviously were able to read it if you could translate it for us, and I think someone should be giving YOU advice if you're having a spaz attack over spelling. Get over it, and grow the hell up.

selectopaque answered Thursday March 10 2005, 8:29 am:
admin already has a chatspeak detector in effect on this site. She has certain words in the detector, and if you try to ask a question, or answer a question with more than two of those words, then your question will not go through and you will be asked to speak in English.

Since she put that in effect, the questions have gotten incredubly better. If you see any questions on this site that have a large amount of chatspeak, or if there are a few words that you see often, I would suggest giving admin a list through the "suggestions" link on the sidebar.

Other than that, it's been under consideration to try to change questions with chatspeak, to questions with English, but stupid people like Kr4z3y_Ch3lly would get angry and think that we're trying to "butcher" their already butchered question.

Well, im not gunna "rock" cause some people like the way they talk. What if the way you typed wasn't normal and people wanted to change it? How would you react. Probibly be pissed right? Don't worry about it. And if it bothers you so much dont go on the internet anymore. Or find some "im perfect" person site and go talk on there. No offence...

"Chatspeak" is okay sometimes, but if you use it too much no one will know what your talking about. So it is just better to use "English" when asking questions. That's what I think.
