Question Posted Wednesday February 23 2005, 11:53 am
Ok, well lately, many of my friends have been smoking weed. I tell them that it's stupid and that it can harm your health, and stuff such as that, but they keep telling me that weed doesn't harm your body in any way what-so-ever. If anyone knows, can you please tell me what side-effects you may get from smoking weed? (I'm a 14/f, if that's important, which I don't think it is.)
There are short and long term effects...
1. Risk of Bad Marijuana - Marijuana could be laced without your knowledge with anything making it even more dangerous. If it is mixed with other drugs or poisons, it can do physical damage to your body (sometimes deadly).
2. Decreased Mental Abilities - You may put yourself in situations where you practice unsafe sex, which can lead to a sexually transmitted disease. You may also get behind the wheel of a car to drive, leading to a deadly accident.
3. Difficulty with Concentration & Mental Confusion – Marijuana may cause you to forget easily, and have difficulty studying and learning.
4. Bloodshot Eyes - It just doesn't look good!
5. Excessive hunger - You may eat unhealthy food that you are craving due to marijuana use. This can lead to weight gain.
6. Sleepiness - Your weekend's no fun if you sleep through it.
Long term effects are:
1. Psychological Dependence - You may start feeling like you need the drug to get by in your daily living, which is not good for you and very expensive.
2. Increased Tolerance - Your body may require more and more marijuana to get the desired effect.
3. Sexual Issues - Marijuana affects your hormone levels causing a lack of sexual pleasure, decreased sperm count in males and infertility in females. [ xO_Natalie_Ox's advice column | Ask xO_Natalie_Ox A Question ]

Karen answered Wednesday February 23 2005, 2:37 pm: I don't consider these "side effects" of smoking weed but it will make you smell bad and you can forget about things. I hear it does do things to your brain cells and harms them. My friend smokes weed and she just gets really annoying sometimes so you can also consider that as a "side effect." Tell your friends that smoking weed does affect your body but smoking weed won't do that much to your body like smoking cigarettes but if your friends do smoke it for a long time, then it may.

Lights_Fade_Out answered Wednesday February 23 2005, 2:27 pm: okkk...well they are completely oblivious to the fact that weed can TOTALLY damage your lungs. MY science teacher had this whole section of our school year on the damage of ANY kind of smoking. My friend also thought it didnt do anything...thought she didnt smoke...and my teacher laughed and said 'you have got to be kidding me'. From a perofessional website, these are the effects...
Effects in General: Euphoria; Relaxed inhibitions; Increased appetite; Disorientation
Overdose: Fatigue; Paranoia; Possible psychosis
Withdrawl Syndrome:Occasional reports of insomnia; Hyperactivity; Decreased appetite
hope i could help you, i know some people that are on drugs and i am trying to help too. its a good thing you are doing. =D

Marijuana is illegal (side effect of a criminal record) and can have some permanent side effects. Long and short term use of marijuana can lead to addiction, the possibility of bad pot (causing medical problems and conditions), decreased mental abilities and burnt out brain cells, mental confusion, lung damage, weight gain, increased tolerance (requiring more of the drug to get you high) and decreased sexual performance. All of these can lead to the permanent side effect of doing damage to your body.
Use of drugs or alcohol can make people do things they normally wouldn't like drive a car while high or have unsafe sex.

FunkyHoMoSapien answered Wednesday February 23 2005, 12:27 pm: well, i know that in the long run, which can be shorter or longer depending on how much you smoke weed or any drug, that it is possible to get a chest infection, like brocitus, which can stay with you for a very, very long time. if you smoke it through your mouth you can get cancer in your mouth and throat, and that can cause your throat to close up wit tar, and other bad chemicals, and the only way you would be able to breath is by a doctor cutting a hole in your throat! And if you sniff it through your nose, your nose will also get plugged up and impossible to breath threw. Now, i dont no about you or your friends, but i wouldn't want a hole in my throat from where i have to breath or not having the ability to breat threw my nose. I hope i can help you convince your friends to quit smoking the stuff!

Its not harmful the way cigs or other drugs..and some say it harms brain cells. Theres a bunch of theories out there and almost all pot smokers insist its not harmful..but its still an illegal drug and it can lead to other serious drugs. a "gateway drug" as they call it. Dont give in to your friends..stay with what you beleive. [ icey0990's advice column | Ask icey0990 A Question ]
MFS answered Wednesday February 23 2005, 12:12 pm: Honestly, it is no where near as bad for you as cigarettes...
Marijuana really is probalby the least dangerous of drugs out there. Yeah, it'll make you trippy. And, in weak-willed people, eventually weed won't get them high enough and they will move on to harder drugs. And pot fucking reeks like something awful.
So...
Do I think it unwise for them to be smoking it - hell yeah, it's still absolutely stupid. But as far as using a health warning - you don't have much data. Some studies have linked it to brain cell loss... and others have debunked that. Some have stated other risks, but the data is always inconclusive. Yet, you compare pot to other substances, and it really is safer for the body... but it'll still make people act like dumbasses and do stupid fucking things.
