if a woman is about 2 months or 1 month pregnant and not showing at all...and she went on an amusement park ride that had a sign that said no expectant mothers posted on it...what would happen to the baby? would it cause a miscarriage??
Karen answered Wednesday February 23 2005, 12:21 pm: A few years ago, when my mom was pregnant with my sister, now 5 years old, we went to an amusement park and she went on a ride that didn't allow pregnant women on it and she was about 3 months old and nothing bad happened to her. There is a slim chance of something happening to the fetus but nothing will happen to the fetus, since it is small. But if this woman was more than 2 months pregnant and was showing, then yes, something could happen to the fetus, since it is bigger and any movement such as going on a ride could do something. This wouldn't cause a miscarriage to a woman who is about 2 months pregmant but then again, it could.

My wife was diving all over the volleyball court (hard court, not sand) while early in pregnancy once - went full term, no complications. Very early in pregnancy, the fetus is so small, sudden shifts in momentum and impacts are almost not felt by it - as the fetus gets larger, there's more of a risk for it becoming dislodged from the uterine wall, causing miscarriage.
That said, if someone KNOWS that she is pregnant, and purposefully takes such risks, that is still stupid.
When in doubt, she should ALWAYS ask her OB/GYN. The ones around here are even able to tell a woman exactly what rides at the local amusement park she is able to ride at which stages of pregnancy. ;) [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
icey0990 answered Wednesday February 23 2005, 12:09 pm: It depends on the turbulance of the ride. If its extremely extremely thrilling and there are lots of movement..yes something could happen. It may not..the safest thing to do is to simply not ride. At amusement parks they have to put a sign saying those pregnent or have heart problems, etc, shouldnt ride so they dont get sued. Yes a miscarriage is possible so the best thing to do is to not take the chance. [ icey0990's advice column | Ask icey0990 A Question ]
