Recently, I've thought about trying to learn the guitar. I don't really know anything about guitars but I also play the clarinet. Does knowing how to read that kind of music help in reading guitar music? And is it really hard to learn it when first starting out?
GothicFreak2765 answered Tuesday June 14 2005, 11:02 pm: Its not hard at all. Ive played trumpet and yes it does help as any musical experience will with any instrument youre trying to learn. With a decent teacher and practice itll be extremely easy to learn. [ GothicFreak2765's advice column | Ask GothicFreak2765 A Question ]
WTF answered Wednesday January 26 2005, 8:31 pm: if you read sheet music, it should be easy for classical stuff, but for reading tabs its even easier, its just what number fret on which string, its incredibly easy, the only thing youll need to work on is speed. alexf_2001 answered Wednesday January 26 2005, 3:14 pm: if you can read staves then that's definitely a good start. you should probably start out on a cheap acoustic/classical guitar and see if you can find some lessons etc. you'll know how hard you need to practice to get good at something if you already play the clarinet so basically apply that to the guitar also. it isn't that hard when you first start out because you can quickly play nice little tunes which makes you feel like your actually getting somewhere, rather than practicing scales all the time etc. Who knows if you keep practisin, one day you might be up there with the greats :p
xO_Natalie_Ox answered Wednesday January 26 2005, 12:15 pm: Yea, if you already know how to read music it'll be a lot easier to understand it. It can be kind of hard starting out it depends what kind of person you are. If you really try and practice a lot I'm sure it's a lot like playing the clarinet. Buena Suerte! I took a semester of lessons at skool a few years ago.. but I barely remember all the chords.. its not that bad.. your fingers hurt after a while.. I too played the clarinet.. for almost 4 years.. Guitar is NOTHING like clarinet.. the notes are more of chords.. its hard to explain! [ jeanine278972's advice column | Ask jeanine278972 A Question ]
xoxMayjoNxox answered Tuesday January 25 2005, 7:01 pm: Im in the same situation that you are in. I play clarinet, and have for 4 years. My step-dad got a guitar for christmas and i wanted to learn how to play it, because i have really been into guitar, but the music of clarinet and guitar is completely different. I really dont think it would help you that much to know clarinet. I know it didn't help me. Try n find somebody that knows how to play guitar and that played it for a while and they can tell you how to read music and everything.. hope i helped..

EricStarr answered Tuesday January 25 2005, 6:04 pm: Yes, your knowledge in reading music will help you in your quest to learn to play the guitar.
Also, the dexterity you've most likely developed in your fingers will be a big plus as well. Its just a matter of learning what strings and frets make the notes on the staff that you want to play. At first you may have sore fingers till the tips develop calluses from the strings but you'll do great. Enjoy! [ EricStarr's advice column | Ask EricStarr A Question ]
