Weight Loss Surgery

Question Posted Friday December 31 2004, 10:35 am

I'm contemplating having the bariatric surgery done. I'm 140lbs over my "ideal" weight... and the diabetes and other probs are too much to deal with for the next 10 years. I've been this same size plus or minus 20 lbs for longer than that...and I have hated being heavy... now we have insurance that will cover it!! I think I need to do it... Just wanted to see where you stand on the issue... and see if you're supportive of the idea.

It's good that your insurance is covering this, but you should definately look into the risks involved with this surgery before getting into something that has a lot of risk involved (and there is always some sort of risk when surgery, especially major surgery such as this, is involved).

On the 'approval' aapect - if this is something that you really want and excersize and eating habits aren't helping, I think you should go for it. Doing what is right for you in your life should be something to consider, and as you have diabetes (and most adult with diabetes are overweight) I can see why this may seem like a great opportunity. Just check things out and make sure you get a doctor you can talk to, and ask as many questions as possible before you decide to go through with it.

Hello. A member of my family had gastric bypass surgery. I'm not sure if what you're talking about is related to that surgery or not. The surgery was very successful for her and she is looking and feeling great. There are many risks to the surgery, but if it's a matter of your health I say you should really look into it. You should research the surgery and talk to many different doctors about the surgery and all your options. Just remember, you're doing it for yourself and your health and no one else. I'd like to know what you decide... Feel free to get back with me if you like. Hope all goes well. Good luck!! <3

I see nothing wrong with getting surgery done for health reasons. But, just to ask because you didn't mention it, have you first tried other ways to lose weight? Like exercise and diet? If you have and nothing's worked, then yes, I'd say go for it.

MakalahLea answered Friday December 31 2004, 1:59 pm:
I have heard mixed things about this surgery. Some people have had it and it has changed their life for the better (John Popper) and others have had it and it has made their life worse. This surgery is not a promise that you will be thin for the rest of your life, you can and many people have gained a lot of weight after the surgery from simply not trying. That being said, you know your body and your medical history more than anyone on here can so if you and your doctor really think that this is the best for you as a way of improving and extending your life I am all for it. However, I think that before you have this surgery you need to really talk to your doctor and find out what you will be going through. Ask him about the benefits and the risks. Do a lot of research on your own. Try out the links that I have posted below, read the testimonials and the facts. Prepare yourself so that you will not be surpised later. Pray and ask your family for their opinions and help. Best Wishes!

Whatever makes you happy, Ma'am/sir. Sherry and the other girl, seriosly. Grow up. This isn't the place to be bickering like a couple of 2 years old. And for the record, Sherry is really pretty.

Your best bet is to ask your physician where he/she stands on it, not an online advice site. He/she will probably suggest diets first because it's the healthiest way. But if you've tried dieting and just can't keep the weight off, the surgery is probably best.

I don't think you need it at all!!!.. Weight loss surgery is for people who are grossely overweight, and you could die from getting it done. I'm also just against weight loss surgeries as well, because I think if you have a problem with your weight YOU should do something about it, like exercise and stuff. Your going to be putting your life on the line, spending alot of money just to lose about 20 pounds. When you could be on a diet and exercise all the time, and you could lose that 20 pounds in 3 weeks or something!!.. I wouldn't do it if I were you. Choose what you want to choose.

* yeah, sorry bout my misread--ishhnesssss

Heyy. My friend from church did this surgery as welll. I think it was called Gastiric Bypass but maybe their are other names for it. You need to understand everything that can go wrong in a surgery like that and also whats gonna heppen in your body. You cant have sugar, ever! My friend is like loaded on Splenda haha. But i think its a good idea if you wanna lose weight and do it fast! Hope everything goes well:)
