Question Posted Thursday December 30 2004, 4:11 pm
i hurt my wrist playing volleyball about a month ago. my dad told me it was sprained and it would stop hurting in about a week or so. but my wrist has been hurting for a month. i can't do pushups or lift anything without it hurting. what do u think i've done to it? i rate high!
Additional info, added Thursday December 30 2004, 10:53 pm: oh yeah.. and my parents refuse to take me to the doctor, and i can't put any weight on it! also, i am in weightlifting instead of gym.. so that could have caused it too. and i haven't lifted since school has been out (dec. 16th). JadedinNowhere answered Sunday January 9 2005, 3:35 am: I actually had a situation like that once.
I went to a soccer camp over the summer (I'm a goalkeeper) and in the second day we were working with the field players for shots. Fore a demonstration, one of the older instructors kicked the ball. I was stupid enough to forget not to settle the ball by pulling back a little bit as I caught it. At first it was a light pain, and then it started getting worse and worse. I didn't have full movement of my wrist and before I knew it I was being taken to the doctor on location. He classified it as a sprain and put a light cast on it to help. He said I could still play and I did. It was sort of hard thought.. the cast was sort of big and bulgy. Anyway.. so we're starting to drive back home after everything is over, and when I take the cast off to look at it, my wrist is all different colors.. green.. yellow.. purple.. it was sort of strange, so we went to a doctor. They said it was just a sprain. But it kept hurting and my parents decided that we should get a second opinion.. so.. we went to another doctor whom was more of a specialist with breaks and such. It turned out, it wasn't actually a break, but a bend in my bone. See, if your young sometimes your bones bend rather than break. They still classify it as a break though, and you still need a cast. If you don't, you can end up being limited in your range of motion at an older age with your wrist because it will heal wrong. So, if your parents care about your future health they will get you to a doctor. If they tell you it's not a break.. get a second opinion, maybe even a third, because a large percent of the time doctors don't even find that.
also, since you've taken a lot of time off your wrist could also be unused to the strain your putting on it. Maybe give it some time. Your wrist could be just sore, like your legs are after a bunch of lunges. You do have muscles in your hands to you know, so it wouldn't suprise me that they act in the same way as your quads do after lunges. americangirl101 answered Friday December 31 2004, 1:37 pm: ok I sprained my wrist to and it hurt for a month so no worrys! What you should do is take some cloth or if you have that special cloth to wrap around wounds and stuff or just a towel or somthin wrap it around your arm and keep it still! dont try to move it or use it as little as possible. If the cloth doesnt work go to any store like cvs pharmacy or wallgreens or walmart or somthing and ask for a hand cast its not a real cast its a black or wat ever color they give you thing that goes around your arm/hand and it is velcro and it really helps so my advice is to do that feel better soon! <3 American Girl [ americangirl101's advice column | Ask americangirl101 A Question ]
KiLLeROnDaCourT answered Friday December 31 2004, 11:29 am: You have definently injured your wrist. you might have torn a muscle, you might have sprained it, or maybe there is a tiny break, also called a hairline fracture. You really should try to get to the doctor. You need to have a big discussion with your parents. Tell them you cant put any weight on it, and if they dont fix this problem now, it will affect you for the rest of your life. hope i helped [ KiLLeROnDaCourT's advice column | Ask KiLLeROnDaCourT A Question ]
PinkLady4863 answered Thursday December 30 2004, 9:48 pm: it is still possible that it is sprained, you are just are a slow healer or didn't give it time off (weightlifting is not exactly giving it time off) enough for it to heal.you constantly putting pressure on it will cause pain, but you have to keep moving and ignore it. but there is always a possibility for a fractured bone, and that could cause problems. so if it still hurts the same in 2/3 weeks, you tell your parents you are going to the doctor because this isn't normal. the more you complain, the better chance you have, lol. hope i helped* [ PinkLady4863's advice column | Ask PinkLady4863 A Question ]
zapreth answered Thursday December 30 2004, 7:39 pm: This is neglect. It sounds to me like a hairline fracture. It can't heal on it's own the way you are over working it. You need to get to a doctor for an x-ray. A doctor will be able to properly slint or cast or sling the injury and give you a list of activities you should and should not do to help promote healing. I have been in a simialr situation. I hurt my toe when I was young and it hurt all the time, but my parents wouldn't take me to the doctor. They said there was nothing the doctor could do for it. Now at age 31 I have since had it x-rayed by my podietrist because the toe is permenantly blue-black and I have terrible pain from athoritis in it. He said that my toe had been dislocated and never properly alligned. That NOW there is nothing he can do to help me, but a set and splint when the injury happened would have healed it completely with little to no athoritis. Some days I have trouble wearing shoes due to the ache. My parents felt terrible when I told them. This is satisfying, but not a solution to my current pain. 23 years ago is when my current pain could have been remedied. If your parents won't take you find a free clinc or something. You need to go. Good Luck! [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]
Helper answered Thursday December 30 2004, 6:37 pm: I suggest the following Scheme.
Ask if you could walk to a Friends house and sneak to the hospital wing(take a taxi). ask your friend to cover for you. with good planning it should go down perfectly.IF you get a cast, tell them that your friends mother forced you to the Hospital.
YoshiP162 answered Thursday December 30 2004, 5:46 pm: I think about your wrist injury is not that severe. The weightlifting is what you shouldn't do since your wrist is hurting. That would make it severe. It's best if you go to the doctor, and try to convince your parents to go to the doctor. If they're not taking you, then tell them that your wrist is hurting for atleast a month. Also, how did u sprain your wrist? Did you sprain it while you were serving or spiking it or etc? It seems like you have sprained it by the volleyball hitting your wrist with such force while you were spiking. Just be careful the next time when you play as your wrist feels better. Michelley answered Thursday December 30 2004, 5:38 pm: They REALLY need to take you to the doctor...if they absolutely refuse, talk to your school nurse or smthn and maybe she can talk to them and recomend that you go see a doctor...or you could even call the doctors office and they might be able to give you a referal to get x-rays. Or you could just get someone (*friend, older sibling, cousin, aunt, uncle etc) to take you to the doctor bc you really should go!! If you call the doctor they might be able to prescribe you pain killers over the phone. Once I bruised my foot playing field hockey and it hurt for about 4 months, but it really helped me to soak it in warm water (*and this stuff from bath and body works...it was like some kind of soothing body wash that I mixed into the water)and wrap it in an ace bandage. Nothing was wrong w.it so the doctor couldn't really do anything...I just had to wait untill it healed.

XxXCheerStarXxX answered Thursday December 30 2004, 5:32 pm: Hey,this is what you should do.....either tell your parents that it really hurts and force them to take you to the doctor.....or go to a pharmacy and get a bandage thing or ask the lady at the counter what is the best thing to do with your injury.....or if your still in school then go to the clinic or what ever and have them take a look at it and they could possibly tell your parents that you need to go to a doctors.

Scribble answered Thursday December 30 2004, 5:15 pm: First of all if its been hurting that long then go see a doctor on your own, who may prescribe an x-ray. If it only hurst when you out weight on it then it might be a green slip (i think i got that right) fracture. If you really can't go to a doctor then maybe a wrist support would help. Any sports store oughta sell an elastic wrist supporter, which will ease the problem and might help it get better. Other than that, just keep weight off it. Sparky answered Thursday December 30 2004, 5:14 pm: You could have a hairline facture in your wrist or there is the possiblity of ligament damage in that area. You need to go see a doctor or someone about so they can take some x-rays. But u could also have a slight fracture in one of the bones in your forearm that will cause pain in your wrist also. Plain and simple go see someone about it and try to keep it as protected and like it u have a splint or something like that you should really use it so no more damage is done [ Sparky's advice column | Ask Sparky A Question ]
