I was used as a reference when I didn’t want to be!

Question Posted Monday December 6 2004, 1:18 pm

I've been working at the same place for over a year and I really enjoy working there. I feel like I've established myself as a good employee. A past roommate of mine who I didn't get along with well and only see infrequently recently applied for a position at the same place I work. Apparently, she told my boss and others she spoke to that she knows me well and that I would be excited to work with her. She pretty much said that I really wanted her to work there and would recommend her. The problem is that I know this person is not a good worker. She is irresponsible about coming to work and tends to slack off when she does come. She's not very respectful to employers either and tends to demand that they give her time off whenever she wants it. I'm concerned that this person's job performance could reflect negatively on me, since she pretty much used me as a reference without my permission. Should I approach my boss about this? What should I do if my boss asks me about her? What can I do to distance myself from this person so that her poor performance won't make me look bad?

I think you should definitely speak to your boss.he problem is that if this girl does come and work with you , you will probably have to do more work because she will be slack and in the end it won't give you a very good name. If you talk to your oss they will really appreciate your honesty and glad of the fact you can be truthful to them. It is an easy situation as if she has an interview and is turned down, it is in fact the boss's decision who to employ and not yours. Don't worry it will all work out !

I think that you should appraoch your boss about what is going on. if she is going to make you look bad and reflect negativly on your job and how well you are doing it is your repnsibility to let managers or bosses know how she really is and you could be saving them from a lot of problems in the long run. A lot of people put on an act to get hired from a job and most people cant see that. I hope I helped!

Definately tell your boss. Try not to bad mouth your exroomate, but make it perfectly clear that you did not agree to be a personal reference for her. If your boss asks you , don't lie. She used you, meaning, especially if she wrote you on the application, that you vouch for her. She doesn't have to agree with your voucher. For example, an ex-friend of mine used my parents as a reference to work in a daycare. My mother's honest reaction, "Well, she was a friend of my daughter's. I don't think she'd hurt a small child." Not a good personal reference. Good Luck!

Yes, I would definately go to your boss and tell him (or her? sorry) everything. Why not? You can make a big difference by telling him. I'm sure he'll be very happy that you told him, because he won't want to hire her after that. Tell him everything; about her using you as a reference without permission, about her past experience, etc. If you see this girl, just stay away from her. Good luck :)

Talk to your boss about it, but tell him if she asks why she didn't get the position, to please not mention you, unless of course you don't care whether or not it's anonymous. How did you find out she used you? Did she tell you. I would definitley talk to your boss about it, because she lied to get a position, and it could possible reflect on you, and that you're more loyal to your friends than to work, and to some people that isn't a wonderful thing, so talk tp your boss most definitley.

Hey..if it was me, I would definately approach my boss first. Dont wait around to see if he`ll talk to you..I would talk to him. Tell him the honest truth..and Im sure your boss will appreciate that and fire this girl. Take care of business! Its not right that she did that to you without asking permission, and I would tell her exactly how I feel. Dont let her get away with the crap she pulled..confront her and sset her straight!
