figure out the exponent first, then do the problem as it is when you do the exponent. I hope that made sense ^_~

u would square the number w/ the exponent next to it..which would b the -1 in this case. then u multiply that by the -2. if the problem wuz (-2x-1)squred, then u do wuts in the parenthasees(cant spell for my life...lol)first.

ok...u have to use the oreder of operations

which is (u prolly already know but o well)
parenthesis, exponents, multiplacation/division, and addition/subtraction...a good way to remember that is "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" so you would do the exponents first...then w/e the answers of that would b then do the other side then get that answer then just multiply the two answers...hope i helped!!! =]

You only multiply the number that the exponent is over. Then when you get the answer, you multiply it by the other number (which in your case would be -2). If you need anything else, just ask me. I'm in Alg. 1 also. Good luck.

Sporkster answered Sunday November 21 2004, 6:31 pm:
God...you really should know how to do this by now. We learned how to do this in 7th Grade. Ok, so you're multiplying two numbers, one having an exponent? Ex:

2 squared x 3

FOLLOW PEMDAS! Gotta love Pemdas. It's

P arentheses
E xponents
M ultiplication
D ivision
A ddition
S ubtraction

So, following Pemdas, you would solve the exponent first.

2 squared = 2 x 2 = 4

Then, you would put 4 back into the problem and solve.

4 x 3 = 12

So, 2 squared x 3 = 12

Hope this helps! =) If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask! Math is one of my fortes. <3 Sporkster

[edit]
If you don't want advice, don't ask for it. You asked how to answer a problem, so I gave you a step-by-step guide. It's nice to know that so many of the people on this site are polite and give decent feedback reviews.

TucanFullOfHoles answered Sunday November 21 2004, 6:13 pm:
it depends.

(3x2)^2= you multiply the 3 and teh 2, then square it

3x2^2= You square 2 then multiply by 3.

I love math, ask me anytime

manda44 answered Sunday November 21 2004, 6:01 pm:
ok if ur sayin the problem looks like this and this is an example: 2*2^2 (<thats 2 times 2to the second power.) ud do 2 to the second power which is 2*2=4. then ud do 2*4=8
hope that help. also member this
PLease
Excuse
My
Dear
Aunt
Sally
(order of operations)
P- parentheses
E- exponents
M-multiplication
D-division
A-addition
S-subtraction.

anything in parentheses u do 1st, then exponents, then multiply, then devide, then add then, subtract.
example

2(4+3)+2^2-5
1st do parentheses. so rewrite the problem like:
2(7)+2^2-5 (got seven from 4+3
then do exponets. rewrite like:
2(7)+4-5 (got 4 from 2^2 power>2 to the second power. and that seven in parentheses just means to multiply the 2 and 7. so now u do:
2*7= 14 (add rest of problem) 14+4-5 then figure that out. addition b4 subtraction.
14+4=18 so add rest of problem 18-5=13

hope i helped lol.

Tinkerbelle answered Sunday November 21 2004, 5:47 pm:
I think you'd square the number it's above first, then multiply that number by the other number. So say it's -2 with an exponent of 1 times 2. It'd be -2 times -2 which is 4, then 4 times 2 which is 8. Does that make sense? I couldn't really understand what you meant, sorry if it wasn't what you asked.

Moop answered Sunday November 21 2004, 4:59 pm:
you've probably heard this, but to jog your memory:

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

Parantheses Exponents Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction.

Thus in the case of -2(-1) where -1 has a power of two, -1 squared would be worked first because it is within the parentheses. Then it would be multiplied by -2.
