Music Technique

Question Posted Sunday November 14 2004, 5:39 pm

Only answer this if you play an insturment please. I play the violin and after school I always have alot of homework and I can never get practicing in and I'm afraid the teacher thinks horribly of me, but I try on weekends to get some practicing done! Does anyone know a good technique to use so I CAN get some practicing done?

I play 3 different instruments so I know exactly what challenges there are in trying to manage time. What I try to do is when I get home, start on homework right away. Go to your room or a study area where there are no distractions. No TV, no computer. If it helps you study, put on some classical music but play it softly so it doesn't distract you too much. Then you just have to trudge throught the homework. Without distractions, my homework usually only takes me about 2 hours. With distractions, it takes so much longer. Even if your homework takes you 3 hours, you still have plenty of time to practice. When you are done with homework, practice. I always have TV shows that I want to watch, so I just record them with the VCR and watch them later. When you record them, you can also skip through all the commercials! Just remember to rid your space of all the distractions because they will make stuff take so much longer!

I play the violin too, and finding time to practice can be hard sometimes. The first thing you have to do is set aside 20-30 minutes a day to practice. This can be hard sometimes, what with everything else going on in your life, but it must be done. If possible, make it at the same time each night. Then when it’s time, drop what you’re doing and go practice. Then reward yourself, if you remember to practice, then you can watch some TV for a half hour, or go instant message your friends. But only do this AFTER you practice, not before, or you won’t want to stop. Oh, and if you miss a day every once in a while, don’t be too hard on yourself, just make sure you practice the next day. With a little patience, you can set up a schedule that allows you to practice without it seeming like a chore. Hope I helped!

First, when you get home after school, do your homework right away. Then practice violin for twenty to thirty minutes. Try to set a routine down or practice before bed. Something like that.

PS: It's what i did when i played clarinet.

LIFE is CRAZY with all the stuff we have going on in our lives WHO the heck can find time to practice right?!?! i totally understand where you are coming from! I used to play violin also and my teachers all thought horribly of me cuz i could never find the time to practice let alone memorize my pieces! The tough part was balancing my busy schedule. The key for me was setting aside at least 30 minutes a day (trust me its hard at first but you can do it) to practice. 30 minutes will make ALL the difference. When you start to master time management it will become easier and easier to find time to practice. Best of luck! Keep playing cuz im regretting that i didn't keep up with it.

Ok so heres what you do. Start your homework when you get home. Then when you get bored of doing homework, practice. You will just keep switching on and off that you'll get your practicing done and your homework done!

omg i completely understand...i am terrible at finding time to practice my instrument. the best technique i've tried was to set a time with someone else. what i mean is...alright, lets say your mom was trying to make herself run on the treadmill every night. pick a time where every night at that time you would practice and she would run. or maybe one of your other friends can't find time to practice their instrument...set a time and make sure you guys each practice your instruments- maybe call each other before to complain and then finally convince each other to go do it. its a lot easier when you kind of have a commitment to practice with another person...
