If you want to calm yourself then take deep breaths when you get up there. Remember, your "not yourself"... your somebody else. Put yourself in their place. Make it look like you actually understand the character.
As for remembering your lines.. I used to re-read them and act them out. Another thing that helps is if you keep writing them down. First write them down looking at the script, then start writing them without the script. Recite the lines as you write. Eventually, you'll have it memorized. Well if your stomache gets messed up then tighten your thigh muscles...and practice everything in your head. It should help relive stress and make you feel more confident. With learning your lines...just keep practicing them over and over. If you know them completely by heart, then you wont be as nervous. Auditions are intimidating but they have to be. If they werent, people would think the acting is easy and two words: DEFINATELY NOT!! Being nervous for a show actually makes you perfrom better but freezing and shaking onstage is no good. Whenever i got nervous i would look at the exit signs right next to the doors across the stage. It would help me feel better and have something to concentrate on so i wouldnt be looking into the crowd. Don't worry hun. It looks like this is one of your first auditions and its perfectly normal to be nervous. With more experience, you'll gain more confidence. I hope you get the part you want and break a leg out there! [ Jellybellybabe's advice column | Ask Jellybellybabe A Question ]

I am a theater person myself and I USED to get stage fright and I used tobe just like you! Don't worry, I'm sure you have lots of talent to offer and I'm sure once you read lines, or sing or anything in front of people, they'll realize what a GREAT actress/singer you are!

ElementaryHustler answered Friday October 22 2004, 7:13 pm: Your going to be nervous but don't let it seem like your nervous. Walk up on that stage and talk like your the shit. Like basically act cocky. LOL Cocky seems a little bit too extreme but who cares because cocky people have confidence. Start rehersing in the mirror, do it in front of your parents or your friends. Just keep practicing. You will get it. And to remember your lines just reread them over and over every night.
oxDaYxDreaMxo answered Friday October 22 2004, 3:59 pm: That's good that you're doing something for your school! I have a speech problem (almost gone now) so I never got lines in plays. But I'm sure you have a beautiful voice, so try and show everyone your voice. Just focus on your lines before you go up there, and put yourself in the character and forget about everything else! It might be hard in the beginning, but once you relax and enjoy yourself, think how great you'll be! Don't worry IF you don't get in the play, they might not be ready for talent like yours yet. Good luck!! Hope I helped! -Ce [ oxDaYxDreaMxo's advice column | Ask oxDaYxDreaMxo A Question ]
greenday_junkie answered Friday October 22 2004, 12:31 pm: Hey~No offence but if you can't do it in front of your teacher how are you going to do it in front of everyone? You just have to kinda act like well I am better than everyone out there so that way you won't feel nervous! [ greenday_junkie's advice column | Ask greenday_junkie A Question ]

tell her it wont affect your performance, but that in front of him/her you get over whelmed.
prettygurl101 answered Friday October 22 2004, 12:42 am: i think u should just memorize your lines as best as you can(reherse your lines everynight to a friend or family member) and do ur best. If you can't say a few lines infront of a teacher then I don't think you would be able to preform in a play infront of a big crowd. [ prettygurl101's advice column | Ask prettygurl101 A Question ]
BlackAngel answered Thursday October 21 2004, 11:28 pm: Mmk. To start, just work on the memorization. Once you have the lines down really well, then start practicing in front of a mirror, and make sure you look AT the mirror, not at the floor or other places. Stare yourself in the face as you say your lines. Once you can do that without stumbling, try it in front of your closest friend, or parents, a sibling, someone who can give you feedback about if you need to slow down, or pronunciate more etc. Once you're ok in front of one or 2 people, try it in front of a larger group, just keep building up the number of people you're talking in front of. If you talk in front of people who are listening to you so they can help you, then it's like having someone judge you for a tryout.
Siren_Cytherea answered Thursday October 21 2004, 10:48 pm: Okay, I never get stage fright, but I went through the same thing. I learned a monologue in one day, went to audition for a play, and totally blanked. Do roll-downs. They help calm you. Stand up straight, keep your knees bent. Start by tilting your chin down, then roll your body down vertebrae by vertebrae (like a reeeeeally slow toe-touch). Hang there for a few seconds, then sloooooooooowly straighten up. You should feel more relaxed. If you get nervous tension (I get it in my hands, and always end up playing with my rings or something), put the tension somewhere else.
OH - and before you go to do your monologue or however you're gonna audition, make sure you know it backwards. Seriously, memorize it, say it the right way, then say every line starting with the last one, and ending with the first one. I did it, and I felt so confident. Try starting at different places, too. If you do that, and you know your lines solidly, just let your brain go on automatic when you're on stage. Think about something totally obscure. Just make sure you don't suddenly click in and start thinking about what you're saying. Lol. I've done that.
I hope this helps - good luck with your audition!

S_C answered Thursday October 21 2004, 10:36 pm: Practice the lines in front of a mirror.
Just concentrate on the character, pretend that there is nobody else around. Picture the audience in their underwear. Uhhhh, when reading the lines, read them how you would actually say them in that situation. Just try to realize, nobody is judging, they're just trying to pick the best, out of the greatest.
