Hey there. Ask away whatever you want answered and I'll do my best. Please avoid unconventional capitalization and spelling - it makes the questions harder to read and so I'm less likely to answer.

I'd like to discover new music, and I was wondering if anybody knew any artists or bands similar to Taylor Swift? Or does anybody know any songs or artists that make songs similar to the songs that Taylor Swift makes? I really like Taylor Swift's songs because I can relate so much to them, and they have so much meaning! The lyrics make you think too. Thanks! :) (link)

I don't know any artists off the top of my head. However, try http://pandora.com/ and click 'create a station' and type in Taylor Swift. It'll give you music that's similar to hers.

sorry this is so long.
i used to SI (self injure) like cutting and burning myself but i had to tell my boyfriend about it. i told him about 5 months ago and we have been together for about 8. after i told him i really tried to stop and i did for a little while. i havent cut (which was what i usually did) in about 4 months but now for some reason the urges i get seem to be uncontrolable. i knew that before i tried to stop i was going to get urges but i havent cut in so long and i figured they would be gone by now and they are not. well i tlod my boyfiend about the urges i still get because he is the only person i cant anything and everything to and he made me promise i would talk to my mum about it but i dont see the point because she cant do anything about it to help me. only my dad can because he has custody of me and he wont, he would just call me crazy and resent me like he did last time. i have seen a couseler before and the guy i saw was really wierd and i hated talking to him, although some of what he said helped me. i wouldnt mind gonig back into counseling with a different person but i cant tell my dad because he doesnt think i need to. and maybe i dont but whatever. i just want the urges to stop so i dont start cutting again. i know the little tricks like snapping a rubber band on my wrist. i tried that but it's not enough. i like the feeling of pain. i know how corny this all sounds.
anything to help is wonderful. thanks (link)

I know how it goes. Been there for a few years. However, I agree with the first response - be proud of yourself for resisting for as long as long as you have. It's been over 2 years since I stopped, but I still sometimes want to cut. I feel like it's sort of an addiction - basically you get addicted to the pain, but also to the release of chemicals that happens when you're in pain.
If you don't have the support system at home (sounds like you don't), is there any way you can speak with a school counselor? I know they're not always the best, but it might be somewhere to start. Plus, it sounds like your boyfriend is some support, and really some support is better than none.
What I do now is clench my hands so tightly that my nails bite into my palms but since my nails won't actually get through the skin of my palms, I don't have the scars and bleeding, but it still hurts. It doesn't actually leave damage and it might be helpful to decrease the desire for the chemical release.

Okay so my mom and i have always had a semi-close relationship. But she just got a facebook... and she wants me to be her friend on it. I have no problem with the fact she got a facebook, but i kind of need my personal space when it comes to these things. I dont want her to read what i say to my friends and such.... its not that they're bad. It's just that i'm really uncomfortable with it. I told her all of this and she's making me feel extremely guilty, and telling me that i'm SUCH a good daughter for not accepting (sarcasm).
So i really don't know what do do.
Am i horrible for doing this?
What do you guys think?
15/f (link)
|
I don't think you're horrible for not wanting to be friends on facebook with her. My friends think it's weird that my mom and I are facebook friends.
However, if you can't reason with her and make her see your side, there's the option of limited profile. Unless she's already tech savvy, and especially facebook savvy, she's not likely to figure out that other people can see more of your profile than she can. And, once she figures that out, maybe she'll have had some time to think about why you'd limit what she can see and she'll be easier to reason with/she'll see the reason behind your choice.
I also agree with the first answer: ask her if she really wants to know/see what your friends say on facebook. And if she does, then ask why.

My hair is really thin, but I want it down for my wedding, so I wanted a small, not-too-flashy tiara to go with my dress and veil. David's Bridal prices on tiaras are a bit too much for me, so I was wondering where else in the US I could get a nice tiara for a decent price. (link)
|
Try some of the chain craft stores like Michaels or JoAnn Fabrics. They usually have a wedding section with flower embellishments, ribbons and tiaras/other hairpieces especially for weddings.

in high school we needed good grades to get into college but in college, what are good grades good for besides maintaining a scholarship and not getting kicked out of school/your program? do employers see your college gpa? (link)
|
Graduate schools look at gpa's. I'm not sure about employers - they might look at an overall gpa if you're going into certain fields, but I highly doubt they look at individual class grades.

I forget what the site was called but if I typed in a band name like The Spill Canvas 10 other band names would come up sounding similar.. and i dont remember what its called and its bothering me.
Any Ideas? (link)

It's probably pandora.com

ok i have no idea what to do for it. The project is im supposed to write a modern pilgrimage in the same style as chaucer
like use lots of irony and make the characters kinda take the modern role of the ones in the canteberry tales. It can be to any place that people would go to today, like i know someone whos making theirs a trip to the shore
so basically if you have any ideas on where they should go, and ten characters to put in it, then please let me know.. asap!!! its due tomorrow and i havent even started... YIKES! (link)
|
What about putting 10 high school or college students together on say a band/orchestra etc trip? Make them from different 'castes'/cliques in school (stereotypical mind you). Might be sort of lame, but it could be interesting.
You could also send them on a church trip, or a road trip across the country.
It's not much to go off, but maybe it'll at least get you started. Good luck!

Okay well i'm 16 years old and i want to start dancing lessons.
I did about a year of ballet but that was when i was 6.
I know all the good dancers have been dancing since they were really young and so i need some advice.
I would like to know if its a good idea. I really love dancing and i want to take lessons in contemporary or hip hop or something but would they even let me? Is there anyone else who started dancing late in their childhood?
I'd also like to know how much lessons would be if anyone can give me an estimate.
Any other helpful advice would be gratefully appreciated. (link)
|
Some people say it's too late to start, others say it's never too late. I think the real answer depends on what type of dance you want to do. Ballet is pretty hard to jump in when you're 16 (you've hit the nail dead on with the "dancers start when they're young") but other stuff isn't nearly so hard. Tap is challenging no matter when yous start, and anything with flexibility could present a challenge, depending on how flexible you already are.
Studios will totally let you start classes. I think the easiest ones to start when you're older are ballroom (but that's partner, which you said you didn't want to do) and probably contemporary or modern dance. Prices are going to vary depending on how many classes you take each week, the studio etc. Per class, they're likely to start around $10 and go up from there, also depending on how long the class is.

so im going away to college in a few days.
my one question is...what should i pack everything in? i have 2 laundry basket type things that im bringing some stuff in...but what else?
and for those of you that have been to college....if you can think of any little things that i might not think to pack...that would be great :) (link)
|
Yup, suitcases work really well, plus you can rotate though clothing if you want and put light clothing in your suitcase during the winter and vice versa. Storage space plus a good way to carry stuff for move-in. Also if you have any other kind of storage like plastic bins or stacking cubbies...stuff like that works well to keep stuff neatly together, plus you can back clothing like socks or sweaters around any fragile things you might put in storage bins. Using your backpack for things like books you're bringing, or notebooks/journals, photos that aren't in frames or other fairly flat things is another option.
Journals are good, so are photos of friends/family/favorite vacation spots. You'll likely acquire pictures of college friends at some point as well. Make sure you have a solid way to hang decorations - magnets are super helpful if you're planning on lofting your bed and it has a metal frame. Depending on what your school offers and where you are, a small fan may be useful (my college doesn't have air conditioning in all the dorms so the fall is nasty without fans).
Make sure you have any cooking pots/pans/special silverware (wooden spoons, pasta strainers etc) that might come in handy.
Hopefully some of that was helpful. Have a blast at school!

Is the book like the play?
is it good?
anything on the book or play will help (link)
|
They have the same basic plotline, but they're not that similar. The characters are portrayed differently and not everyone survives 'till the end of the book.
I've seen the play and read the book and they're good. If you see the play first, you won't be comparing it to the book, which is nice.

My best friend has liked me for a few years. We've been close to dating before, but I got scared and thought I still had feelings for my ex and called things off. I've liked him again for a while now, so I'm considering trying it again. The thing is, I'm leaving for college next year. Seeing him won't be an issue because he will be at the same college, but is it a bad idea to start a relationship before college? I'm not going to spend all my time with him...I'm going to make sure that I make my own friends and have my own life, but does anyone have an experience with this, or even just any opinion? That would be great. (link)
|
Having just finished a year of college and watched what you're talking about happen, here's my advice. Don't go into the year in a relationship. I've watched a fair number of couples break up because they met someone else or felt too tied down and unable to branch out. If you and your friend decide midway through the year, after you've established your friends etc, that you still like each other and want to give a relationship a shot, then go for it. I'd give it through the first semester before jumping into anything though.

okay well im trying to use my itunes gift card on itunes (obviously) to buy a song. i typed in my code on there, and it said this card had already been redeemed. i typed my code in before but i didnt buy anything. so, since my card was already redeemed, how can i buy songs? (link)
|
You only have to enter the redeem code once and you're set to buy songs until the money on your gift card runs out. Just find the song you want, click 'buy song' and it should give you a window that asks if you're sure you want to buy the song and it's straightforward from there. There's a little box in the upper right side of your iTunes that gives your account balance if you're logged into your iTunes account.

14/f. to make a long story short, my doctor thinks i have depression. i wouldnt doubt it. i am constantly sad and crying and mad and all that stuff. she suggests i see a pshycologist. i was just wondering...if i get put on pills for depression, what happens exactly? i heard it very risky. help? (link)
|
If you get put on meds the goal is to help balance the chemicals in your brain. I don't know what pills work for different people - that's why you have your doctor.
I'm not sure risky is the right word, but it can take a couple tries with different meds before you and your doctor find one that works right for you.

whats the difference between preceded and suceeded? For example, "Preceded by
Sex and the City Emmy; Succeeded by
Everybody Loves Raymond "
WHAT!? (link)
|
In this instance, succeeded by means 'followed by' and preceded by means something will come before it.
So your example would be, in other words, "before it will be Sex and the City Emmy and after it will be Everybody Loves Raymond."
Precede is basically before and succeed is basically after.
Unless you're talking about the other meaning of succeed which is to achieve something.

Ok so I'm doing an immigration essay at school and I'm writing about how it's beneficial to the United States. The problem is, I'm really confused and I have no idea how to word and set up my essay. The problem I'm having right now, is that I can't think of 3 main points. Like for each point, it will be one paragraph. I think I could do a point about Cultural stuff, but I need 2 more points. If anyone could give me ideas of 2 more points to write about (and I don't want them to be rude), and if you could give me great websites or say your opinion than that would be GREATLY appreciated! (link)
|
Culture can work - the US is a "melting pot" of cultures (or so people claim) so more diversity is good.
Immigrants often will do the jobs that Americans don't want to do. (Sounds harsh, but it's true). Americans like the corporate jobs with really high pay but the non-corporate jobs have to get done too and some of them make a good bit of money.
Also check to see if there's a benefit to international relations there. I'm not sure but it might be worth checking out.
Check these sites too.

I am auditioning for a high school production of crazy for you. though i just bought the soundtrack, i am not familiar with it yet. auditions are soon. i need a monologue and a song for a 2 soprano. tips/advice/anything??!
thank you!! (link)
|
Unless otherwise specified, high school auditions generally require a song and monologue from any show, not the one you're auditioning for. Having been in Crazy For You, there really aren't any monologues since musicals generally lack them. I'd suggest picking a monologue from somewhere else and using it. Make it upbeat and fun since that's the idea of the show.
Most of the songs from the show should work for a soprano auditions. Listen to the soundtrack and find one you like.

There's this salad at Panera's. It was relatively new during the end of summer? It's like salad with chicken, strawberries, blueberries, tangerine, walnuts, and of course greens. And it had this sweet but a little tangy sauce. I really liked the taste of the sauce but I have no clue what sauce it is. Does anyone know what it could be? Or how to make it? (link)
|
It's a poppyseed dressing. I think Panera sells it at some locations. Otherwise Briana's poppyseed dressing can be bought at the grocery store and it's basically the same thing.

I'm emo. I go by the labels in my skool so deal with it. Well, I hear we should waer gith black jeans and cut ourselves. I don't like tight jeans, they make my ass look bigger than it already is, hahaha. And I can barely handle a shot at the doctors place, hahaha, so I can't do either of those things. I don't have to do those things, do I? Don't talk to me about don't cut yourself, I already know that. But I want to know, do I have to? Because, emo means emotional. (Dictionary) Obviously I'm emotional, weirdos. (didn't mean it in a rude way, just proving a point) Can yawls help me???? ^/_\^ (link)
|
No, if you cut yourself just because of labels all it's doing is looking for attention and it's not worth it.
And no, you don't have to wear skinny jeans, generally GUYS that are emo wear them. Girls have a lot more freedom with clothing.

All of my friends know what area of work they are interested in(medicine, education etc,) but I have no idea! Im in honors Chemistry and im passing all my classes. But there arnt any classes that i LOVE. help
(link)
|
Don't worry about it. Honestly. Even if your friends think they know right how what they want to do, more likely than not they'll change majors in college.
Maybe it's more that you're not TAKING a class you love - try new things! There's nothing that says you have to want to be a doctor or medical profession or teacher. Try joining student groups, take voice classes, anything! You'll find your calling, no worries - it might just take a little time.
|
what's so different about college as opposed to high school besides going away and living on your own? (link)
|
Living away and on your own is a big one, but you also have to (most of the time) have a roommate and if you're not used to sharing your space, that can be a big change. You get to really choose your classes, professors don't usually take attendance so it's up to you to be responsible and get to class and make up work you miss. You also get a ton more opportunities to join different groups and really figure out what you want to do. There's a pretty big responsibility that comes with choosing your classes; you have to make sure you're not taking too few credits and that you're not taking so many that you can't do anything. The homework load generally increases (some colleges say 2-3 hours of work for every 1 hour in the class).
The drama can still exist but it's a lot easier to get away from it. It's easier to avoid people you don't like and generally people have more sense than they did in high school and you can usually sort out issues in a more mature manner.
