Jeanne answered Friday December 28 2007, 3:10 am:
Precede means to come before
Succeed means to go after or follow

If something is preceded by Sex and the City, that means it came before Sex and the City

If it's Succeeded by Everbody Loves Raymond, that means it comes after Everybody Loves Raymond.

preceded by sex and the city emmy means that whatever we're talking about happened after the sex and the city emmy. succeeded by everybody loves raymond means that whatever it is we're talking about happened before everybody loves raymond.

In this instance, succeeded by means 'followed by' and preceded by means something will come before it.

So your example would be, in other words, "before it will be Sex and the City Emmy and after it will be Everybody Loves Raymond."

Precede is basically before and succeed is basically after.
Unless you're talking about the other meaning of succeed which is to achieve something.

solidadvice4teens answered Thursday December 27 2007, 7:24 pm:
Preceded means that which came before someone. For example Michael Keaton precedeed Val Kilmer as Batman. George Clooney suceeded Kilmer because he was cast as Batman afterwards. That's the difference of each term right there.
